Whow else thinks Brazilian Pepper tree is the worst alternative in California? I call for the terminator.It deserves the death penalty. Poeple who choose it should not be reinbursted for for their anal decision.How can we be so desperate & unrealistic as to pick something so worthless & depreciative

This thing is a big pest in Florida. You would not believe how tough that son of a gun is. I had one in my yard that was not very big. I lopped it and covered it with a coffee can, but it still took several years to die.

But every state has got its Brazilian pepper tree. When I moved up here (NY), I found out Japanese knotweed is even worse. I've been told that can grow through 6 inches of asphalt. Remember that Twilight Zone episode about the tumbleweeds trying to get into the house? That's what Japanese knotweed is like. rustle rustle...

I like the pepperberries. Dry and use as black peppercorns. I saw a lot when I was in California recently, but they didn't seem invasive. And, I thought they were pretty, with their lacy foliage.

Oh, shoot, I should have included this: it's a "multitrunk" (3 total) with (obviously) 3 "leaders." All 3 are staked now, but because of the geometry, NONE of them is technically vertical. Obviously having all the "trunks" on an angle doesn't make it easier for it to support itself. So how does that change the situation of trying to make it grow upward and eventually become self-supporting, or does it?

Seems I've got to speed this up a little, just saw the neighbor pruning some bushes and remarked on how busy he's been "cleaning up the yard". He said he's out of work and has nothing to do, so he's clearing a 10' swath all around his property (5 acres). I'll try those cocoplum, but I've got a feeling a privacy fence may be in order, rather than the farm fence we've got.

The county agent mentioned that getting unwanted tree growth from Pepper Tree mulch might only be a problem if mature berries were in the mulch which would be during the winter months around Christmas time. Otherwise there did not seem much issue with using Brazilian Pepper Tree as a mulch product. Doug
