Any Blogs?

With winter coming on, I find myself looking online for native plant sites, blogs, and nurseries. As I posted earlier, I've had some luck finding the nurseries; my question is: Does anyone have any favorite blogs or other related sites?

Blogs focusing on the Northeastern US or, more specifically, PA, NY, NJ are of most interest to me.

I live in Western NY State and the nurseries specializing in native plants nearby are:

White Oak Nursery

Amanda's Garden

Plantsman Nursery

You can check their webste for any blogs or informational articles. I've purchased plants from all these nurseries and have only good things to say. Enjoy!

Terriks, that's a good one!! The issue I'm having with some suggestions (both here and from a couple of "real life" friends) is that I don't want this title to sound like it's the name of my business... if you know what I mean. For example, Resourceful Interiors sounds like a great name for a business. Kinda wish the editor had assigned a name. This is a lot of responsibility! (Although maybe not -- for all I know, this column will get cut after the first issue!) Right now I seem to be focusing on: House Proud Feathering Your Nest Department of the Interior If it helps, here's my rough draft of the beginning of the first column. And can I just say it is very difficult to write only 300-500 words on a topic! Okay, so here's the beginning. If you have editorial comments, please be kind, but basically I'm just including this in case it helps you to "vote" on a column title (just to clarify -- the title I'm looking for is for every column, not specific to the topic of this first one). January is a time of renewal and resolutions. By now, the tree, the menorah, the boxes and gift wrap have been cleared out, and you may be looking around your home and feeling like something is missing. No, not the shedding Christmas tree or the balls of crumpled wrapping paper. But maybe a few things around the house are not...quite... right. Everything looks okay, but you're not excited about your living room. Your kitchen's a mess. Your bathroom is blah. Perhaps as you peer around your spaces, you'll find that you've committed some basic decorating sins. Care to redeem yourself? It's not very difficult. Sometimes it's even fun. Following are just a few of the sins you may be unintentionally guilty of.

I never heard of doing this kind of thing, but I was just looking at the Islander System website, and they sell a pattern to make greeting cards using sewing. Of course, that is not what you are looking for, but it does seem to be out there. I wonder if you could find a craft magazine at a bookstore that had directions on how to do this. It may be too late for Valentine's Day, but there will be St Patrick's Day and Easter and birthdays and so on. Good luck to you. Rosefolly

The one website I subscribe to - definitely worth the cost - is Cook's Illustrated (www.cooksillustrated.com). They not only have equipment reviews, tasting results (which semi-sweet morsels are the best?), and a great recipe database, their recipes have explanations of what works and what doesn't. They typically begin with a description of a problem, (most breaded pork chops lose their breading etc...) then follow with the phrase "We cooked 100 (roasts, pound cakes, whatever)" and a solution (potato starch!!!). It's a must-have for both the experienced chef and the novice. For healthy recipes I love the free blog Nom-Nom Paleo (link below). Keeps me well fed, rail thin, and smiling :0 I am a culinary legend in my family because of Christmas Dinner, 2010 for which I served Bon Appetit's Mustard-Seed-Crusted Prime Rib Roast with Dijon CrÃÂ©me FraÃÂ®che and Roasted Balsamic Onions (recipe at the link below). I subscribe to the magazine for myself and a friend ($20 for 2@one year subscriptions - worth every penny; it's a beautiful mag) but the website is FREE to all. blog addict here. I have a reader set up just for garden blogs. Most of these people I follow on twitter which I have found to be a great resource for connecting with people of similar interests. The list is incomplete and pretty much people who garden for wildlife, biodiversity or eco-friendly which results in a heavy leaning toward natives. I could list two dozen more. They are just a few but try their blog rolls. Many quality blogs out there!

There is a site called Blotanical where people with gardening blogs post links to their blogs. It has a map that you can use to zoom into your area and find gardening blogs.

karyls, if I go through the blogrolls, I'll end up with so many to follow, I'll never leave the house! You stated, " I have a reader set up just for garden blogs." What is a reader?

I'm especially looking for blogs of natives with lots of pictures showing how they have transformed their properties. I love before and after shots!

I should have checked back sooner, because I didn't have much luck finding any, so I decided to start my own so that eventually I will have before and after shots--right now they are just before pics! ...with a few "during" pics thrown in.
