As we inch into August and the hosta season begins to wind down (insert frowny sad face here), I thought you might like to see my 2014 hosta garden video. It's a young garden, started in 2012 and not all my hostas are featured, just the worthy ones for now! Less than 4 minutes of your life and not wasted, I promise!

Thanks everyone! I think I like it a lot? It's different and "unique" it adds its own something special to my hosta garden for sure! I wasn't sure I would like it so I debated on it for a few minutes but $5 was too good a deal to pass up just because of some barely noticeable frost damage! I relocated it into Luna Moth's old pot. It's bigger. I ordered Cherry Berry today, so I'll need the smaller one I had it in for her. The pot it's in now should (hopefully) last a couple of years? I put it in front because it says it's more sun tolerant. If that's wrong, I can always move it later but for now, it's good.

Love your overview,Gesila! No,your hostas are not too close together. My garden looks like that,except mine is spread out over a larger area through the woods. Love hearing that midwest accent. My wife is originally from Romeo Michigan,32 miles north of Detroit. She's lost her accent,though,but when we go back north,I hear those accents again from her sisters. Great tour,but your hostas are going to get even closer together,in the future. Phil

Tim: one word...awesome! Regarding those fruit that have holes, open one up. Might be weevils or fruitworms. Regarding BMSB, haven't seen any here, YET. Not sure about traps -- every time I read something about traps for like Japanese beetles, the conversation leads to them being a bad thing and just attracting more than without the trap. Thanks again. Yes, I admit I plant somewhat closely for impact. Even when you think you've given things enough room, you sometimes need to reconsider! I found this pic from 2012 of the rear bed (against the woods) and you can see my original arborescens planting locations with the daylilies behind. I cannot believe how much everything has grown since! But each year I'm always moving things, sometimes once or more monthly throughout each growing season (the neighborhood probably thinks I'm nuts!). Even things that need moved only a foot or two I don't mind doing, because that's another hunk of solid clay I'm loosening up and allowing for root expansion! Other things have naturally spread voraciously as well, like the daylilies, irises and fuzzy-leaved rudbeckia (these are no joke!). Hostas are even getting huge now. I'm at the point where I'm composting overexpansion; wish I had time to give divisions away or sell them! With the most recent transfer of non-bloomers to containers, I find there is a reasonable amount of room for everything with the inventory as-is. I will be cutting in Invincibelle Ruby and Incrediball Blush soon, but those are the only immediate plans. I also prune various items throughout the growing season, as new branches always seem to be growing where they shouldn't. Guess only by chance really, but I subconsciously seem to like the way the Japanese hydrangea gardens are laid out, like a sea of flowers. Without an overabundance of rain (fungal issues) the hydrangeas are very happy planted closely around one another. I will be using large stakes and fencing for Annabelles next year though, as they still manage to spill over onto neighboring macrophyllas. For me, some things seem to bloom more profusely in shade, while others don't. There's really no rhyme or reason to it I've found yet. *shrug* At the current time, I would tell anyone to go ahead and try planting at the woods' edge and see what happens. If adding a completely new bed you'll probably need to chop through some tree roots unless the bed is partially raised by fill or new soil.

I thoroughly enjoyed your musical slideshow. You should sell it as a screen saver!

It won't run on my Android tablet (because it doesn't support Adobe Flash, but it is easily seen on my Chromebook and desktop.

Well, I just spent like an hour or an hour 1/2 on your website looking through all the pages! What fun! I just went for the hostas, then one thing led to another :) Cooper is so darn cute. I did a double take when I saw the pic with the little girl b/c it tickled a memory. We have a VERY similar pic of a little girl with her labradoodle that was sent back to us from a family. The similarities of the pic are uncanny.

Just wanted to say, really enjoyed the site! It was great fun!

Thanks all! Glad you weren't bored in those 4 minutes! I actually visited a new friend's hosta garden yesterday and I'm practically embarrassed now to show mine....his is over 25 years old and MAGNIFICENT! I literally had goosebumps looking over his 1 acre-500 variety magical landscape. A Blue Angel 8 FFET WIDE.... ahhhhh my garden aspires to be half as lovely as his one day.

To funnthsun - thanks, our Cooper is the furry light of my life. And don't judge me by my Halloween costumes! On second thought, yeah, you can judge me by my Halloween costumes. haha!!

Spectacular hostinista. My only criticism is that it went by too fast. It deserves to be slowed down to better appreciate each shot

Beautiful plants and a very good video. I bookmarked it so I can find it again. I recognized some of your plants as in my garden, love to play the CAN YOU NAME THIS IN 5 SECONDS game, don't you?

I noticed your drops photos, edge photos, closeups are so nice, you have a steady hand or else use a tripod. Guess I'll have to pay closer attention to my camera habits, because it makes a difference.

Thank you for this nice break with soft music too. And, look you drew out the elusive Paula in Jax FL! Good for you.

jonnyb - I agree with you - 3 seconds per hosta is hardly enough but the website infrastructure only allows me 150MB per video so it's either that or cut down the number of hostas and view each of them for 6-7 seconds. I figured I should cram as many as possible into that limited 150MB!

And mocc - I was going to insert wording (names of each hosta) into the video but then, that wouldn't give you enough time to read the name and view the plant so I left it out.....besides you are all experienced and talented enough to guess each one correctly I bet!!

And no tripod, just pick a non-windy day and hold it steady. Obviously, pics taken BEFORE Happy Hour....

Hostanista,

I worked with an advertising agency to make up convention slide shows for the products we made. They said 7 seconds was the optimum to keep on each slide otherwise it loses attention or moves too fast for impact.

Can you make 2 videos?

jonnyb - I never thought of that! Yes I could certainly make 2 or more videos although friends and family would certainly tire after the first one. Only hosta nerds like us would likely click on the 2nd and subsequent videos. My website is basically to keep family and friends updated on what I'm up to. I'd bore them to tears loading more than one hosta video at a time! I can see them rolling their eyes now.....!
