Prune a snowberry

colebug

We have a snowberry plant that is mature. When we moved in to our house, it was surrounded by landscape fabric and lots of mulch. The landscape fabric has been removed.

Last year I removed some of the older branches down to the ground  less than 1/3 of the total plant.

The plant is leggy and, while it has lots of snowberries, the snowberries weigh down the branches and they dip severely towards the ground. The branches are mostly straight up with no side branches.

What is the best way to prune this plant to encourage stouter, more bushy growth? I read that one should cut to a side branch, but my plant doesnÂt have much for side branches. Is this a plant that I can cut to within a foot of the ground and have it regrow well?

Any words of wisdom are welcome.
