Building an octagonal greenhouse
Comments (5)After reading more of the posts on this forum, I started doing more research and came upon this link, which describes a greenhouse design that would be cheaper and easier to build but hold more planting bed area. If I build this design at 7'9" by 15'6" (~120 square feet), it won't need a permit. I would build it out of cedar with stationary double-pane windows. The steeply pitched roof (55 degrees) is supposed to let the most light in, while reflecting light off of the north ceiling, which is painted white. I've given up on trying to store heat in water barrels, in favor of solar panels to power vents, fans, lights, and heaters. I hope this greenhouse won't need a concrete footing. Comments (10)I built a 8 x 12 leanto gh attached to a garden shed. The GH and shed cost me ~ 2K. The GH was built using discarded windows (Craig's list and freecycle) out of 2 x 4 PT wood. I used 2x 4 construction and double glazed it with a sheet of galss on each side so i had a 3.5" dead airspace. Worked nicely. My newer GH is 50 x 26 double layer of poly and it has cost me less than $2K so far. Watch for auctions! Bruce... you must me using the wrong poly. Make sure it is UV treated. It should last a minimum of 4 years and can last as long as 10 according to my local GH grower. The ends of my GH are made from used GH poly that was on the GH i bought at auction for 7 years and it's more clear and just as tough as the new stuff i bought for the roof! Comments (4)Good point lol. My main plants I am planning to grow would be various cactus breeds, so humidity control would be quite necessary. I can run power from my house to the greenhouse to run a couple fans during the day. I might end up buying a solar panel or 2 though, as it would be nice not have to worry about outside power. I am still debating whether I want the plants inground or not. Im thinking just in large pots/containers, and posswibly making a solid floor out of concrete or something of the sort. Still debating that. I might just leave the floor as dirt at first and see where the sun hits the floor. Being that it is 5 foot deep I think some of my plants need to be on tables. And I plan on having my larger cactus in 20-30 gallon tubs. So a solid floor might be the way to go for me, but not quite sure yet....See MoreBuilding New Greenhouse - design and solar suggestions wanted
Comments (2)As far as solar panels, there was a discussion here last winter/ spring on heating and powering a greenhouse with solar panels. Those that contributed to the discussion provided a ton of info, maybe do a search for that discussion Good luck!
