Back in the 70's we lived in Grand Junction, CO. The valley there is bordered on the east by the Grand Mesa, a large, flat-topped mountain. On the northwest corner of this mountain, just off the top on the slope, the winter snow drifts hang in the shape of a goose/swan type form. All the valley old-time gardeners AND serious crop farmers would tell anyone never to plant corn 'til the snowgoose was gone from the Mesa. My father-in-law followed this guideline religiously, and always had a great crop. This was a very localized example, to be sure, I would imagine there are others around the world.

I've collected seed from sagebrush and germinated some. They germinate easily when collected in December but the percentage of seed to germinate is very low. I have never tried to grow sagebrush. The seed from Oenothera deltoides, desert primrose are easy to germinate an grow. One of the finest plants East of Reno, in my opinion is a grass called Oryzopsis hymenoides, Indian rice grass. I can get the seed to germinate but it takes years to produce an attractive plant.

Not a milkweed. It appears to be something along the lines of solomons seal, maianthemum, uvularia or similar monocot plant. The pictures aren't really good enough to id it by. When it flowers it will be easier as there are several plants with similar stems and foliage. And I agree with Ken to try the Name That Plant Forum.
