Susan, I love your light stand and always will love it. I realize it was the best solution for you, but if I told Tim I wanted to buy one of those, he'd hand me a hammer and tell me to build my own....which is why I have the one that I have. : ) Mine is hidden away out of sight in a room where guests rarely venture, although anyone who knows me and who knows I raise my own seedlings always asks to go upstairs and see it in the spring. So much for putting it out of sight....I just should have set it up in the dining room or breakfast room or something.... I am sure you'll be deliriously happy with it and will have many wonder seed-starting adventures and I look forward to hearing all about them. I think you got a great deal considering it was Gardener's Supply. I never buy anything of theirs for full price. They have sales often enough (and especially in November when, I think, some of us gardeners are shopping for ourselves) that a person can be patient and get a good price during their periodic sales. I've noticed that prices often are not as good in December when gardeners' spouses or family members are doing what I call "panic Christmas buying" and cannot afford, time-wise, to wait for a sale. I don't think you were repetitive at all. The more we all share about what we do, how we do it and why we do it (as well as pointing out what didn't work for us!), the better for all of us to learn from one another's experiences! Carol, Our weather is just like yours. Our high was 70 degrees yesterday and it was so gorgeous outside I could hardly stand it. I wanted to jump up and down and scream "Spring Is Here!". That was exacerbated by the smell of the orange blossoms on my little orange tree. However, I controlled myself because I knew it was a false spring and that winter was returning today. It was 56 degrees around 7 a.m. here at our house and now it is 36 degrees and we have had very, very light rain but lots of thunder. Phooey on winter! I think you showed those folks at the co-op that one benefit of being a gardener is that it keeps your muscles and joints strong, healthy and fit. I'd rather "work out" in the garden any day, than walk on the treadmill or work out on the weight machine. Who wouldn't? Trees, Nope, sorry, I just haven't gotten to it. I am trying. Watch for it in a couple of hours or in the morning. I'm about to start typing mow after I close up the chicken coops, put out the deer corn for my favorite deer, refill the bird feeders (those little birdies are eating nonstop today trying to stay warm), etc. I'm kind of dreading going out into the cold wind but I need to do it now before it gets dark. I have to warn you that I don't use the same planting schemes every year because I don't want to get stuck in a rut, but I'll try to mention some of the planting schemes in my usual rotation. Dawn

What makes me chuckle when reading this thread is how often book clubs are reading the same books. Fall to Your Knees, The Memory-Keeper's Daughter, Wicked, A Fine Balance (which I loved) Water for Elephants, etc. and I've noticed this in other bookclub-themed threads. My club is 5-6 years old; most of us make a sometimes herculean effort to finish the book out of respect for the person who chose it (though every book we read has been voted on) as well as knowing that the discussion doesn't have a snowball's chance of success if the book hasn't been read. Personally, I could not finish "Seabiscuit" to save my life as I kept falling asleep while reading it. "A Beautiful Mind" was our inaugural book and nearly did our club in as almost noone could finish it. "Wicked" was also an unpopular choice with a number of members not finishing it and so was almost impossible to discuss which I found disapointing. We all read "Crossing to Safety" and enjoyed trashing it, unlike most other clubs who loved it. By and large, our best discussion come when any or all of these factors come into play: most, if not all, members have read the book; the designated discussion leader has come PREPARED with questions, background info, etc.; the book actually has some meat to discuss (please don't ever make me read Sophie Kinsella again); and the book isn't universally liked by the members. My club just had a terrific discussion using "TMKD." Even though I didn't find it well-written, it resonated with our group and had some grist for the mill. So--yes, I usually try to finish up the book, even if it is just a cursory and skimming read. I also thought "The Little Children" was an awful book with flat characters and a nonsense story line and I would have to be "locked in" somewhere to re-read and discuss it. On the other hand, my clubs meets in restaurants for dinner and drinks and I have no doubt that some late nights, the restauranteur would like to lock us out...

The one thing that is set in stone is engraved shot glasses for my friends wedding. Actually more straight sided so they fit tea lights. Over-ordering so they will be used for veggie cups, probably a chocolate mouse for the 'cake' tier, and table lighting...possibly a gazpacho. They want enough for all to take home a few. No cake. A big tiered affair we are making. Petit fours, various chocolates, mini this and that...massive amount. (we are making the tier) another friend is making and organizing all the sweets. We did a no-no list. No heating or re-heating on site. All fresh do-ahead. No pineapple, no mayo, (except fabanaise), No melon baller, lol. No dips, no bagels, no humus. No charcuterie platters. Yes to mini scones. Maybe to mini frittata. No dance floor, loud music or band. Friends will bring instruments for impromptu music and a few good singers among us. (later around sunset bonfire) A few toothpick items...caprese, watermelon/fetta/cucumber/olive, (square). One all fruit and one all veg/fruit. They want all squares or triangles. Classic crustless tea sandwiches. And probably a club and a pastrami, cubed and toothpicked. For kids, chocolate almond butter and jelly, honeyed cream cheese and Nutella on raisin bread, (so good). Maybe a pinwheel or two. I'm making spring rolls. One rectangle table for tea/coffee tea at two pm. Tea sandwiches, etc. One rectangle table other side of tent for misc veg snacks One round table for 'cake' and misc sweets 3 round tables for sit down, lots of extra chairs service at five pm 2 food stylist/caterers early to prep, (they are fast and precise)...they leave around 2-3pm but will make soup and salads before they leave. Salad in small white Chinese take-out containers. Big kitchen island for prep and oven/stove can be used but trying to avoid too much of that. Everything at the same location/waterfront. A friends home but stipulation was a tent and an executive port-a-let...very nice one. After service not decided. Probably a small catered Bbq/clam bake/bonfire Fhew, first time I wrote that out. I've been doing shopping lists and loose budgeting.... Oh, they booked and paid for 20 rooms at a great spot nearby for mostly flight travelers and will host an open bar after party there. Invited 110, probably final tally will be 85-90

Yes, Americans muddle high and low/afternoon tea, which is why I would muddle low tea with lunch or even breakfast, rather than the more elaborate dinner . . . I just love the idea of a platter of one type or other coming to the table like those tiers of small bites in an afternoon tea menu. There was a wonderful restaurant in a nearby city (casualty of the pandemic) that offered fondue as one of its specialties. It was so fun to get your own little personal fondue pot and all those fun choices of things to dip in it. Sort of like ye olde "pu pu platter" at some other places, or tapas. I just happen to like the food that goes with tea . . . And Greek. Oh yes, I love Greek and it is a rare treat in my region as well. There was one restaurant in Saugatuck but it closed. Few restaurants even offer Greek entrees. Even ones run by Greeks!! I cook pretty good Mediterranean cuisine but I wouldn't trust myself to run a restaurant on those skills. We had a wonderful tapas place, that I mentioned as also having a Sunday brunch buffet. It closed. Nothing nice stays open in my area. But if you want mediocre pizza and wings, they abound. Dairy Queen drive through is the busiest place in town. And pot shops. I tried to go to my local laundromat yesterday (our dyer is broken) and found it empty/gone out of business. But there were four pot shops being about the only thing left open in the whole strip mall complex. A total of eleven pot shops within a mile of each other on my end of town, mixed among the mart marts and fast food joints. Get high, eat junk food and buy cheap carp made in China seems to be the message my town is sending out. Hard to imagine any type of nice restaurant succeeding which is why this is hard for me to play. We do have a nice coffee shop recently opened that has a pretty good lunch menu and baked goods selection. Nothing special, but pretty good. We'll see how long it lasts. Two almost identical places like it have closed in the past ten years. Heck we can't even support a bakery. Several folks have tried and failed, on gal manages to keep a food truck bakery going . . . this problem with upkeep and rents for storefronts is killing my small town. I have a friend who owns commercial property in a nearby small town. He rents "at cost" just to keep the places from suffering being empty. But he doesn't make any money anymore. He talks to all kinds of entrepreneurs who just can't pay the exorbitant rents . . . I imagine this is an issue with restaurants too. One landlord in our small town is the same, she rents "at cost" just to try and keep the business district from totally going under . . . and still it is almost dead . . .
