Under the crabapple

I have a newly planted crabapple about 7' tall. North of the crap is a maple that will probably die in the next 2-5 years. I'd like to plant some kind of native groundcover underneath. It will need to take part sun and compete with the roots from the crab and maple.

I was thinking of wild strawberry, starry solomon's plume, or wild ginger. Any thoughts?
