seeds, nuts,berries, and edible plants.

Today i found some type of seed wrapped up in a paper like outer layer and an inside gritty cream colored paste with an almond looking seed in the center... i put the paste to my tongue and it tasted somewhat like a chokecherry. What is this seed from? can i eat it? also could anyone give me a link to where i can find a list of all edible plants/and or edible fruits that are native to utah ? Thanks!

I wouldn't go tasting things even ever so slightly that I don't know. That can go so wrong!

I would strongly suggest that you go to your library and look at books of edible plants. Peterson publish one that looks like an identification guide. It also tells you what the dangers are. Never eat what you cannot identify. Same with mushrooms. Do a course first.

I didn't sow it expecting it to fruit soon if ever. I just thought it'd be a neat experiment and my dad was eating a grapefruit one morning so I thought 'eh...why the heck not?' It is outdoors right now getting lots of light and is happy as a clam. I'm just paranoid 'cause this is it's first summer outdoors and it's been stormier than usual so I keep reminding the hubby that if it starts to storm, put it on the porch or bring it in. Is this a good idea or would it be fine to let it weather out the storm which usually consists of very heavy rain, strong winds (snaps huge limbs off of full grown trees) and thunder and lightning. Even hail the half the size of golfballs sometimes. I just don't want it to get shredded. And since you mentioned the lemon tree...*goes out and buys a lemon*

I would water the plants until you harvest to make sure that the plants are still as strong as possible while the seeds are filling out. Sunflowers don't require a lot of water, I would think once per week is plenty.
