Ah, so that's the weird plant with red berries that's growing in the weedy areas of my yard. Just add it to the list of invasives that need to be removed.

No berry, including 'Deadly' Nightshade is poisonous to everything that eats it. All berries are intended to be eaten by something or other, then the seeds spread in the animals' droppings. Bittersweey Nightshade berries are commonly eaten by birds, and that is how the plant spreads. I am not sure what eats the berries of the other nightshades, but I bet a wide variety of birds eat them.

One of the toughest plants to eradicate. If its growing among desirable plants, make a solution of roundup and paint the leaves. Monitor and reapply when needed, which will be frequently. Be patient!!! Eradication will take time and time and time.

hi folks i know this is a old post but i have some nightshade plants on my small garden and i have eaten the leaves and they are nice when cooked.now the plants are producing some nice juice berries that are black.are they poisonous and can they be eaten by humans?thanks

Eric -- Any idea which nightshade it is? I would think you would want to make a definite identification before proceeding. Perhaps they are black nightshade,
Solanum ptycanthum?

Are you in the U.S.? There are quite a few Solanum species here, some native and some introduced. I'm assuming it's not deadly nightshade, Atropa belladonna, since you're alive to tell of having eaten the leaves.
