Attention NE Illinois and NW Indiana Hosta Lovers

Is anyone familiar with Woldhuis Farms Sunrise Greenhouse in Grant Park IL? I stumbled onto their website awhile ago and registered for their mailing list. I am home on a staycation this week and made the trip yesterday after learning all perennials are buy 2/get 1 free. What a haul! I got 27 hostas at an average cost of about $7 each. HereÂs the list of my finds:

Some varieties are quite new and I thought the size and prices of the plants outstanding. Sunrise is between Chicago and Kankakee IL. It was about 95 miles from my NW suburban Chicago home, but well worth the trip. The catalog lists about 400 varieties, but it appeared only about 200 were in stock. Unfortunately, Sunrise does not do mail order.

I am jealous! What a super haul - you will have an outstanding display! Are you just starting a new hosta bed or will these go in existing beds?
We have a great hosta nursery here in CT - but sales like that don't come around.

I am starting a new bed with Empress Wu as the centerpiece, but I am also replacing several Fortuni Aureomarginata and Wide Brims as well as a few that have not done well. I'm also enlarging one bed to place some smaller hostas at the front. I really do not have a place for all, but the prices were so good I got carried away.

Lynette & Rj checking in from Pac NW, where we've gotten a brief repreive from the constant rain this week and in its place, bitter cold temperatures and frozen hoses. Our geese are NOT happy! We have 4 Indian Runner ducks, 2 Buff O hens (they're just the best!), 3 Muscovies, 7 geese, I can't remember how many rabbits, a dog and a cat. We'd like to add goats next, but one step at a time. In addition to our menagerie, we both have green thumbs. RJ took over the gardening this past summer and it was equally as bountiful as our first year (though we give credit to our rabbits for their 'contribution'). This is our second year of 'farming' though we both work to support the mortgage on our stratospherically priced 4.5 acres. Property is really REALLY expensive around here! We surpassed two hurdles this past year toward our goal of self sufficiency. First, we took on the rough task of learning to process our own meat. Difficult, but comes with its own quiet rewards. Second, we learned to hay-out by hand, our own tiny pasture, (yes, with a scythe and a rake) and plan to continue growing as much food as we can for our animals, as well as ourselves. DH got rid of raccoons in my parents' chimney with ammonia. My mother kept hearing crying sounds from the chimney and people thought she was losing it. It turned out to be a litter of raccoons. DH set up cinder blocks/bricks to a spot as close as possible to the inside entrance of the chimney. On top of that, he placed a pie plate full of ammonia. They changed the ammonia every other day to keep the smell very strong. Sure enough, Mamma Raccoon removed her babies one by one. Then my parents had a chimney cap put on or something to keep them from returning. Of course, outdoors is different. But placing shallow containers of ammonia among the hostas would be worth a try. And has anyone tried Liquid Fence? It has worked very well for me and a lot of friends for deer, on hostas and shrubs. Of course, that is applied to foliage, not the roots voles eat.

Hi! I live in Hickory Hills (SW suburb of Chicago). Been lurking (and occasionally posting) here for about six years now. It's great! I love all the pictures, plus the forum is so informative and friendly. I live in Lovettsville, VA, which is in Loudoun County. We are considered "Northern Virginia" and are just outside of Washington, DC. I grew up in Fairfax County, which is even closer to DC than where I live now. I feel lucky to have grown up near DC and try not to take it for granted. It's still pretty amazing driving over the bridge and seeing a view of all the memorials from the car.

I have been going to Sunrise for years. I am a regular and live close by.
Great prices, great clean greenhouse and it's not all hostas.
They carry around 450 varieties hostas at the beginning of the season by the end of April this year they sold out of 200 varieties. And they replenish often.
You don't need to buy2 and get one free to get a good price on a hosta. Usually the big name ones are half the price than mail order and large.

There are a few of us regulars on this forum that visit.
I dragged Westy down here and she's been there 2X this year and has one more visit set up.
