Do you mulch first year plants to help them survive winter?

Is mulch a help or a hindrance for young natives?

I bought some plugs of these species that I planted in early summer, and while they've grown a little bit on top, I'm sure most of the work they've done this summer is on their roots below ground because on some (especially solidago) the leaf growth has been very minimal. Our winters are usually very long with a great deal of snow (several feet) and subzero temps (-30 several times in January, February).

Will I lose any of these through the winter or are they winter hardy (after all they're natives!)

Blue vervain

Culver's Root

Solidago speciosa (hardly grown at all above ground this summer)

Agastache feoniculum (I thought I read that anise hyssop sometimes will not make it through the winter, is this true?)

Liastris pycnostachya (very little above ground growth at all)
