Planting natives

I want to have several different native flowers, and blooming as soon as possible, but I don't know how to begin. Plant seeds now, buy transplants now, seed in the spring, transplants in the spring, I just don't know what to do. What is the best way to go about getting these wildflowers in?

I have planted plugs in the fall and it worked out well, so you could get started now. Fall seeding works well too if the seed is covered, otherwise birds will have a field day. The decision whether to use plants or seed can depend on how large an area you want to cover. Transplants will almost always yield faster results but is more expensive and labor-intensive. Plants that develop large taproots, such as Silphium spp., are best grown from seed sown in place.

I rarely seed in the spring because many seeds require a cold period to germinate and I have had bad luck with "pre-stratified" seed. A fun winter project if you have ample window space or grow lights is to start seeds indoors and plant them out in the spring.

I'm not a lawyer, but bet you'd be okay in the very unlikely event some authority calls you out on it as long as you keep your receipts. Usually with these sorts of restrictions, being able to show the provenance was legal is good enough. Of course, you'd still be at risk of ignorance or meanness. A Houston area landscaper was raided a few years back when a neighbor reported he was growing pot in his yard and the investigating cops couldn't properly identify it as hibiscus coccineus (Texas Star Hibiscus). It's a fairly common N.A. native ornamental well known to resemble marijuana, so they were either not very well trained or were already out for the guy for other reasons. Who else will plant natives in the garden next Spring?

My husband and I will be building a house in the next year or two. For the garden I plan on mostly native plants. It's easier to take care of them, they provide food and shelter for the native animals and it supports the local ecosystem, which is a big initiative with our town. Part of our property is protected wetland so we have to be extra careful. Of course, I will also have some non-natives too.

In NE FL (Jax area) tropical milkweed does die back as soon as we get a good frost here but this is a good reminder to try and 'wintersow' my other milkweed seeds I bought last spring before I totally forget about them.

im not to clear.. on the premise ... first.. i wonder what the zone of a nursery.. matters to a tree ... are we just talking about transport stresses ... or.. second ... are we actually talking about min winter temps.. which is what zone basically is???? there are many more variables than min winter temp .. when moving south.. warmer zones ... that would be much bigger variables ... all things considered ... and finally.. you speak of natives .. and i wonder native to where?? .... where the nursery is.. or where you are ... or both??? properly shipped dormant.. and native to your area ... i dont see that there is any real problem.. subject to the above ??? .. ken ps: how far.. miles.. are we talking ...2 zones could be 50 miles.. of a thousand ... how about two city names.. or some such
