The most common roses on which galls are reported are R. elganteria. Most often, the galls are reported from northern states and Canada. In the past two years, there have been photos on here (GW) of galls on roses other than eglanteria, but always from northern gardens. The galls I had on eglanteria that I mentioned here about a month ago went to the state ag people who confirmed them as galls, but were unable to identify which species of wasp caused them. I tried to get them excited about a southern record of a gall on roses and they finally confirmed that none had been reported from TN before. On my R. eglanteria's as well as those I've seen from farther north, the hyperthorniness was confined to the gall part, not to the stem above or below it. It didn't seem to be xylem or phloem transmitted. (I do have photos of my galls, but our transfer mechanism isn't working this month.) And there is a gall out there that is even thornier than the one in Cass's photos. About fasciation, at least some fasciation is phytoplasma caused. (The phrase "Asters Yellows' was used for a disease that more recently has been shown, in some plants to be phytoplasma caused.)Lots of papers about Cockscomb, Celosia deal with this, and there's a recent paper (2007) about phytoplasmas in weeds in Iraq. As for the oak dining tables, burled woods sell for great prices so you might be onto something for the future. Mr rose galls weren't woody, though, under the thorny parts, almost pith like cells surrounded the larvae.

I fear that's what it is. Tubers too deep for me, 8 to 14 inches. Roundup. How do you roundup that stuff right in the middle of my plants? Even roundup won't get it all now if I could isolate it. I don't think it's wild garlic, and I suspect many google images are not id'ed correctly. It's a losing battle pulling it even though it does pull fairly easily IF you can isolate it and get a good grip on it, but it will be right back. What nasty stuff, must have come in on something like I'm thinking the lilies weren't clean or the soil, seed starter I ws'ed with or even in some seeds, lots of ways to get nasty things. Guys who do my lawn, etc., could bring stuff in on their equipment. That's the problem, try to make things better with topsoil, bags of stuff, get stuff you never had before along with the battle of what you did have before. I think I'm finally rid of that particularly nasty clover and some plant I never saw before, didn't get a photo for an id, encroaching on the garden, used roundup painted on for some of it, 24d or weed 'n feed took care of a lot that got in the lawn. You don't want 24d or weed 'n feed to get onto your garden plants. So I recommend a high quality spreader or hand spread it around beds but not in them. Or put up shields. Or don't use it at all like some. I would never have gotten rid of that clover and it was a round dark green ovoid smooth edged stuff that looked like it had runners, never had anything like it before. Thanks, at least it's good to know what I'm dealing with. If I apply a pre-emergent, I'll have to give up the lilies, too, probably. At least the isolated patches that haven't been around too long, I can dig down and see if I can get deep enough. So far it's just in the back yard and behind the garage. Rhizomes. Big. Chills down my spine lol.

It's been a few years since I last posted on the clematis terniflora thread, so I thought I should provide an update. The situation here has only gotten worse. In the area by my creek, approximately a half acre of land, I'd say there is hardly 2-3 square feet without a sprouting clematis vine. It is not the native. I know the difference. It was never planted here, apparently it drifted down along the creek. It's infested a mile long valley and there seems to be no getting rid of it. It blankets trees and smothers them, cripples saplings and chokes out new growth. It can't be pulled, it roots too deep or pervasive to dig out (on my property I'd have to dig up a whole half acre!) and even full-strength RoundUp only knocks it back temporarily. It just keeps coming back. The only way I've been able to thwart it is to continually mow, but some places can't be mowed, and besides, I wanted to go natural. Given the endless labor I put into fighting this infestation, not to mention the cost of Roundup, it really pisses me off that people would be so casual about buying and planting this extreme invasive. I'm thinking about taking a video or inviting a state official to see my case, in hopes of supporting a ban in this state. I have to fight invasive honeysuckle shrubs, honeysuckle vines, euonymus, English Ivy and vinca, but I'd say clematis terniflora must be about the most godawful invasive of them all.

Some of these sounded like they'd still be above ground at this time of year: - Bloodroot - Narcissus/Daffodils - Grape hyacinths - Virginia bluebells - Spanish bells - Garden phlox - Star of Bethlehem - Arum <<< not sure what type this could be referring to, maybe Jack-in-the-Pulpit? From my research, most of these seem to be "woodland" perennials who enjoy moisture and some shade, and some seem native to my region (Nashville TN, I think zone 7b). I love the lush forest wildflower theme. I've always wanted that kind of natural-feeling garden. But I think I'd make different choices in annuals, and maybe diversify from all the purples/blues? I'm looking forward to what colors the hellebores, phlox, lilies, iris, and clematis turn out to be, but I'm guessing a lot of purple/white/pink as seems to be her preference. I'd love to add perennials like dianthus, coreopsis, black-eyed susan, echinacea, and/or liatrus but I have no idea how appropriate these would be back here! I have a bed around some bushes and dogwoods out front that seems to get full-to-part sun (currently planted with pink begonias and vinca minor). docmom - that's what I was thinking. Watch what grows where for a year and learn how to maintain what's there. The Lily of the Valley, Star of Bethlehem, and grape hyacinth seem to be invasive and could take over the bed, so I'm curious to see how much grows next year. I'm also a little concerned about the clematis (which I love!) -- I'm not sure what kind it is for pruning purposes, and it's in a fairly shady spot under the dogwood. But it sounds like it'd be risky to move. Do any of these plants look like they're in trouble or not doing well from the photos? Any you'd expect to need extra attention?
