I got a pod of seeds this year (in the spring so they were from the previous year) and planted them right away. Three of them sprouted pretty quickly and I tossed the rest of them (along with their dirt) into my dirt bucket. Well, I used that to pot up other things and these guys kept sprouting - in the end I had 12 new plants!

I have heard if you plant them now, before the seed coat hardens, they will sprout right away (but here in Georgia the seed coat has already hardened). Otherwise, just sow them in a pot according to the winter sowing methods (see Winter Sowing forum on GW if you are not sure) and they should sprout come spring. Another way is to remove them from the pod, mix them with moist medium and put the whole thing in a baggie in the fridge until spring, then plant.

Thanks so much--I think I'll try a combination of methods. For the winter om the fridge baggie method, do you think something like promix is suitable as the medium?
For those I plant now, if I plant them outside do you have any idea of depth?

I succesfully wintersowed them, and since the container only had three inches of soil, I am sure they were not more than an inch deep. I use Fafard B-3 to start seeds, but I imagine any good seed starting mixture will do. I don't incorporate any regular soil because I want to avoid sprouts of things that lurk there. And even with tops on WS containers, I still get some maple trees! Luckily, I can ID those.
