The flowers look like japanese knotweed. Where is it growing?

Oh yes, it kinda does look like japanese knotweed. I didn't find any pics online that had the red?

It is growing in my friend's yard. The blooms get redder with time. The stalks look like bamboo. It is maybe 15' tall.

Unfortunately, there are some new hybrids of this species that are being sold as great new ornamentals. I have seen them recommended in recent presentations. They are very invasive here and in the mountains in NC.

Japanese knotweed has become so abundant along the roadsides here that it creates a visibility problem when turning onto side streets. It's disconcerting to hear people are using it as an ornamental.
