Growing wild in NE Ohio what is it?

I noticed this the other day...thinking a weed was growing on the hill toward the ravine...beside my waterfall. I didn't have time to pull it. So I notice tonight it has beautiful blooms! Glad I was to busy to pull this the other day.

Not sure what it is...if it will come back next year or not.

Oh, and it is not native to the US.

I just assumed since it grew wild it was native...a weed. Imagine that...a very pretty weed none the less. It's considered an Annual...yet also invasive. So it comes back then year after year? That wouldn't make it an annual then would it?

I have two different colored ones that I received in a trade in the fall of '06. Much to my surprise, they are still going strong. Both are the size of small shrubs and they bloom profusely every year. My soil has lots of clay and when planting them, we dug a nice sized hole and amended the soil. Both plants have definitely outgrown the original hole by now and don't seem to mind what they are growing in. One has started to gift me with several seedlings every year, which I try to find homes for since it's so hardy and such a wonderful plant. Definitely the seeds from this one are fertile. I have never found seedlings around the other one though. And I do heavily mulch both sights. I only trim off the dead ends when the plants leaf out in the spring. That's really all I do for them. Krycek1984, I want to address a few points brought up in your post. First, there's really need for more personal attacks. There were enough of those already in this thread. While I sometimes disagree with iforgotitsonevermind, she certainly isn't generally ignorant, and even when she and I see things in almost totally opposite ways, I don't think she tries to be arrogant. Maybe she gets a little over excited, but don't well all. Iforgotitsonevermind's concern was not whether mimosa is currently considered an invasive pest in the area, but whether it had the potential to be in the near future. Your assurance that it "will not become an invasive species unless global warming goes crazy", falls short of convincing me. As I said above, I'm not convinced that it will ever become a problem, but your assertion, that it's not even close, doesn't convince me the other way, either, and seems to be based more on feeling than proof. Your question about who cares if you plant Bradford pears can have many answers including a number of invasive plant groups (which are concerned about their damage to the environment in many areas), neighbors (who worry about the trees falling over the property line onto their car, producing a foul smell, or making the neighborhood ugly when they fall apart at an early age), and those that want to share information they've learned from their mistakes or observations.

I wanted to say a great big Thank You to Stardust !!!! The swap was a success. She did a lot a work to pull this together. The hall was great and easy to find. There were tables and chairs inside for a great lunch of all the food everyone brought. Of course, all nicely decorated! It was fun to see all the door prizes that were all wrapped. And there was a very nice silent auction of books and home decorations. Then, on to the swap. Names were chosen at random to start the rounds and everyone redeemed the tickets they were given for the plants they brought in exchange the the plants they wanted. It took many rounds to use up the tickets. We sure had lots and lots of plants. Stardust brought about 60 plants. Wow! So, everyone got to select a "bonus" plant after they ran out of tickets. So, thank you so much. This was a lot of work and turned out to be a lot of fun. Also, thank you to Stardust's long time & very good neighbor friend who helped the whole day and made the refreshments. I can see that you did a lot of planning, too. your info about sun light seems on the mark. yes the pacific northwest is just about a cloudy as we are. they have green houses at stan hwyet (akron), rockerfeller park & the cleveland botanical garden (cleveland) where you could talk with the staff for info. Jan Becker at Beckers Herbs on Killian rd in green(?) can be amazingly free with information-- but she doewsn't have many exotics. going to OSU at Wooster might not help as they don't have as much grey as we do. You might try so of the growers up in lake county. But they may just be starter plant people. diggerb

Annual just means the parent plant dies each year and new ones grow from seed the next. Annuals can still be considered 'weeds'. Would not call it invasive as you mainly find it growing in disturbed areas. Can tell by the picture this one was growing on bare ground.

Thanks for the explanation of annual. I'm extremely new at this. After having very bad luck with plants. Figured out our issue was the black walnut tree.

Yes the ground is bare where it came up. We just did the backyard and the hill side near the ravine has fresh baren soil. That it is a toxic plant concerns me a bit. But my dogs don't have easy access to the weed. A friend of mine had a moon plant for years...different bloom. Came back every year except for two years ago it no longer came back. She isn't sure why though. Maybe something happened to it's seeds...

There are many toxic plants that grow all around us so that shouldn't scare you. And its been a while (I think I was a kid the last time I find any jimsonweed growing wild around here), but I seem to recall the plants/foliage having a foul smell. Probably even more so to dogs so I can't imagine they would ever bother it. I just mention it since many folks think toxic equals bad and you don't have to obliterate it because it is toxic.

Some sources list the Americas as the native place for this species and some Asia. It seems to be unclear. I live in Western NY State - pretty similar and close to NE Ohio. The only place I've seen this plant was in places most other plants wouldn't/couldn't grow. And in fact, I haven't seen any in decades. I don't think it will overrun your place.

Oh...okay FataMorgana you've given me food for thought. I did plant a rhodadenron on the far side of the falls due to it being toxic. I have read of a pugnant Oder from this plant as well...so that is also a plus. I do have a dog who'll walk and snip and eat flower leaves and weeds. So I try to keep the toxic ones in an area not as easy accessible to her. Wanted to plant tjhr hill with something to help hold it together against erosion. But do enjoy the weed. Something in that area smells...strong not totally inbearable but thought it maybe the miss growing in the waterfall. Maybe it is this weed then. Loved the bloom...so pretty.

Spell check from my iPhone not always a good thing. lol...Moss growing in the waterfall...something over that way smells...musty. Possibly the weed now that I think about it.
