I haven't tried to grow the Gregg's Mistflower from seed, but have noticed the clumps can get bigger and be divided over time. I agree it's a good plant for butterflies. I also like the Turk's Cap. Then there's White Mistflower, Eupatorium havanense, which especially draws them in when fall comes. There's many native salvias that are good nectar plants, Salvia coccinea and Salvia greggi, for instance. Purple Horsemint, Monardia citriodora is one of my favorites here. And I've recently discovered Goldeneye, Viguiera dentata, which the butterflies love and it's xeriscape! Aromatic Aster, Symphotrichum oblongifolium is nice also. The only milkweeds that do very well here are the Tropical Milkweed (yes, not a Texas native, but native to Mexico, which is just across the Texas border, so many Texas native plant people include it) and Texas Milkweed, Asclepias texana (don't know if it would grow where you are, but it does well here). If there's a chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas nearby, they could probably help with what can actually grow in your area. I found a copy of Butterfly Gardening for the South recently to send to my daughter in Houston who is having a house built there. Very good book and has a lot of Texas natives! It seems to be out of print, so hard to find, but there might be copies in the libraries.

Fall planting, or seeding? Either way, I would suggest for tall grasses to go very sparingly on the switchgrass, a bit stingy on the big bluestem, and go stronger on the indian grass and the little bluestem. Switch and big blue have been very aggressive for me, and will catch up no matter how little you start with ion proportion to the others.Pale, purple, and yellow coneflower will not take as long as some other plants to establish themselves, and cover blooms from late spring through fall. New England aster and brown eyed susans also establish and spread aggressively, and give a great fall show. Butterfly weed is al it is advertised to be in beauty, hardiness, and fodder for butterflies in all stages. Purple prairie clover doesn't bloom very long for me, but is very pretty, and the birds ffed on the seedheads all winter, and it is supposed to act as a natural fertilizer. Hope this helps; I am just a hobbyist, but these have been the results of several years of experimenting in my back yard.

Sneezeweed (Helenium autumnale)grows about 3-4ft.tall and will give you a lot bang for the buck. Mine has been happily blooming (bright yellow)for weeks now,and are quite spectacular. I think you can get other colors, but I'm not sure if those are our natives. Even the ones I started from seed this spring are putting on a nice show. The powers that be say it needs damp soil, but mine have been doing fine even in this awful N Il. drought. I'm a stingy waterer too! One problem I have with Sneezeweed is it flops from heavy blooming. Pinching a couple of times in May/June helps a little, and may stall bloom.
