Nice fruit! Will be wonderful when it persists past leaf drop! Awesome thorns. Obviously in an area where cedar/hawthorn rust doesn't decimate this beautiful species. I only wish that could happen here in southcentral KS, amongst our world of invasive redcedar. You go.

Wow-I didn't know about cedar/hawthorn rust until your post. I will go look for cedar in the neighborhood.

I found two small cedars, about 4' tall this morning and cut them down. These were right at the site. I found some more on my property about 100 yds away and cut those down also.
I did find one set of 'horns' on one Hawthorn but nothing else.
A lot of small Hawthorns have a scaly bark and poor leaves which might be a rust problem. These plants all look sick and do not have fruit.
So, on some plants there appears to be disease but on others there isn't.

The rust spores blow in the wind so although you have cut down those on your property you can not cut everything in the radius needed. You should plan on spraying for the rust and removing all the leaves from arround your hawthorn this fall.

do think this is the same family as this, obviuosly the tree pictured has been trained to have a trunk,
in the other picture the C succulenta is shrubby.

It not be a succulanta and maybe be type called "fireberry" or one close to it. but your seems to have the wider like a wing shaped leaves . it seems in the pictures anyway..
how big are the biggest berry on the tree?
Does anyone know if the Crataegus start easy from cuttings or air layering?

they say it is spread every where and it is on all most all of the conservations state lists as being important to reforestation projects but I can't find anyone actually selling bare rooted plants for such conservations projects

well maybe it isn't very hardy, why would they stop selling it if it is hardy.
