Salix species---a willow. The thing that amazes me is that I planted a six-pack of Bidens, and in the middle of each of the six cells, popped up one of these bronze-y plants. I began to get suspicious when one also popped up in one of my planters.

OK - I think the second one may be a Wheeler's pittosporum, as Jinx so aptly suggests. It's weird, because the leaves on top are all brown and very obviously dead, but there are still green leaves on the "under canopy" (for lack of a better term). I swear, if they died, I may just replace them with yaupons. I know they've gained a reputation for being a bit of a bore, but they're the only thing that consistently looks fabulous - still, even after Snowvid - in my area. Thank you all so much! Seedlings are variable. If you are looking for certain shades of cape plumbago, the most common ones available in CA are generally 'Imperial Blue' --which is-darker than many of the often rather pale seedlings, but lighter than the deeper blue 'Royal Cape'. There is also a white, 'Alba'. These plants are rather vigorous once established, generally mounding in shape when left natural, and can get rather large (7-8' tall, 8-10' wide). They can be kept smaller with heavy pruning, or even be hedged (at the expense of some flowers, but they aren't shy about blooming).
