I don't water any plants from below. Never understood the illogical mentality in doing so ... in the wild they get watered from above. (I have yet to see a plant in the wild whip out an umbrella to keep its leaves dry during a rainstorm.) Most (perhaps all?) selags like to stay moist at all times. If your media is of a well draining kind, it will be difficult to over water. With some experience, the weight of the pot may tell you what you need to know -- provided the pot is a plastic one. Make a mental note of the pot's heaviness right after you have thoroughly watered it and have let it drain for 15min or so. Check by hefting the pot every few days. When it starts feeling fairly light weight, water again. Double check by sticking your finger or a dry dowel or chop stick into the soil about 1-2 inches down. If your finger/dowel/stick comes up dry, you need to water. True mosses? Well depends on the type. Some do well constantly moist or even wet. Those from the cold climes often require a chilly to outright cold dormancy to remain vigorous.

Glad to hear from someone who likes Selaginellas. There are three native species in your part of the country. Click on the name to eflora treatment or USDA image This is the only member of the Stachygynandrum section: Selaginella apoda I currently grow apoda outside and I consider it to be a weed species as I have found it coming up in other moss pots! I cannot believe that it can handle our winters as it looks so delicate. There are two members of the Tetragonostachys section in the Carolinas: Selaginella rupestris The USDA did not have an image so I am using my own. I am currently growing this in two different pots. It is hanging on. In one the selaginella was really a nice population but it got overran by mosses and liverworts-reason why I changed my culture to only spraying or watering in the evening daily (maybe depending on weather). But a few days ago I made images of all the pots of selaginella on the bench and noticed in the image of this particular pot that rupestris had survived and there were strobili poking out of the mass of mosses and liverworts!! (Will share images later.) AND the other species is: Selaginella tortipila image of S. tortipila This species is unknown to me. It only occurs in the Carolinas down into Georgia but apparently is fairly common and is found in rocky places. All three of these species should be fairly easy to grow in pots.

I am amazed at how many other GWers are also not involved in social networking. My adult daughter and I are both professionals in separate professions and chose to avoid social networking for a multitude of reasons, including the importance to us of keeping clients etc. removed from our personal lives, along with little faith that what may be posted privately now will always remain that way. Clearly the rug of rules that may seem comfortably woven in place can at any time be yanked from under. I believe GW appeals to a diverse but like minded set that seek out/stumble into GW and stay due to the different type of social and informational connection IT provides - like falling down the well and discovering a new land, or joining a secret club or society - some above refer to GW as a treasure; a treasure is something valuable and special - something you may not want to share even....I imagine part of the distress that the idea of FB linkage creates for some people, including myself, is that whether fears are real or perceived, pointing highway signs and creating easy access usually does ruin what is special....think new turnpike exits to quaint towns, or bigger roads and hotels in formerly remote and pristine parks. Precisely why GW *IS* treasured by so many is reason enough that it should not be recklessly or greedily manipulated as it will likely cease to maintain it's attraction and specialness.
