I think of "Bee Balm" as Monarda Didyama.
Kittyhead's picture looks to me to be "Wild Bergamont" -- Monarda Fistulosa.
So, now I'm not sure which one Silent1 is looking for........
My "Bee Balm" is pictured below. I will also follow up with a post of Wild Bergamont.
I have both growing wild, in abundance.

Silent1, not trying to be nit-picky, but to clarify: Monarda bradburiana is not a red flowered monarda. It's flowers are a light lavender color, and it's virtue in the garden is that it is is an earlier flowering one, short, at a foot or so, and a month ahead of other monardas. Good news for hummingbird fans! If what you have as M. bradburiana is red flowering, it's not the right one.

Here in central PA - State College - Monarda fistulosa (Wild bergamot) is in bloom right now. It occurs in fields, but more commonly along the edges of woods. The plants in this area typically have light purple flowers, farther west they appear more pink to me. Monarda didyma (Bee balm) is not at all common here in the ridge and valley part of PA, but is fairly common a little farther west on the Allegheny Plateau. It had red flowers, and is in bloom right now in my yard. I have lots of both. If you're close enough to stop by I can give you either one.

Phylla ... You are correct. In my attempt to find the true native to pennsylvania species I encountered the Latin names of several species. In my confusion I posted it wrong. Thank you to any and all who have attemted to help me "the helpless chap". I have fortunately found the variety I was seeking down along the brandywine river. I purchased my home "circa 1928" in an estate sale and am now the second owner. Knowing that the previous owners have been gardening this land for near eighty years now left me wanting to preserve what they have done even if it doesn't necessarily meet with my own ideas. A majority of the gardens here are native so I have since managed to remove the imports from the native gardens and put them all in a non native garden of my own design while leaving the natives as is to maintain the legacy of those who built this house and called it home. As of yet there are only maybe four species on the USDA list (for pennsylvania native flowers)that are not here. Hopefully soon to be none. So thanx again for any help and next season I should have enough seed and rootstock for many who desire such natives.

There is a white form but I forget the name I saw it at Jenkins Arboretum in Devon Pennsylvania there is one that is called horse mint or punctata that is a pale pinkish lavender green and I consider an annual since it never comes back in my yard I have the red and lavender ones too didyma and fistulosa

monarda fistulosa does grow in PA and it is available at Bowmans Hill Wildflower in New Hope, PA preserve which will be having a sale in september. You can purchase them there along with many other native plants. I bought one there during the Sprinf sale. Please don't dig one from the wild.

Sorry dragonfly but my message must of been misleading. I acquired it from private land where it was introduced along the brandywine. I was just glad to find someone I knew with white bee balm when in my circles red seems to be the color of choice and commonality.

i was recently given 2 plants of bee balm, but the lady who gave it to me called it bermont(sp?) i love the plant, but im new to it. is it in the same family as what you are talking about, or do i hve something different? they have done nothing in the month since i planted them in my yard. they still have leaves, but don't seem to be thriving. im in central ohio. should they be ok for next year? can i buy more at a nursery, or how should i go about getting new plants. im trying to fill in one of my gardens with as many natives as possible, and hoping to attract wintering birds.

I love Monarda! I have both M. didyma and fistulosa and several cultivars. I think they're beautiful despite the fact that they always get powdery mildew and die back fairly early. Monarda flowers attract quite a variety of pollinators. The plain old red Monarda didyma aka Bee Balm is the best hummingbird plant in my garden.

Kimber, like Oldhermit said the common name for Monarda fistulosa is Wild Bergamot. It is a pretty light purple Monarda and it will tolerate somewhat drier conditions that the Monarda didyma. I wouldn't expect to see much growth on your plants at this point, but if you keep them regularly watered they should get their roots established this fall. Once established they are pretty aggressive spreaders.

SIlent1pa, your property sounds fantastic with all the native gardens that are so many years old and I think it's great that you have preserved their character. I have a deep appreciation for gardeners who have planted and nurtured a tree or garden in the past and left something beautiful for posterity to enjoy.

terrene, mine is a deep reddish, almost burgandy color bloom. im thinking i might have lost one, but the other is still green, just no new growth. i agree, im just hoping to keep several things alive, and will see what happens in the spring. i transplanted a third year hibiscus this afternoon. hope i didn't kill it.

Ty terrene. I certainly feel lucky to have gotten this place. It's been alot of work buying a property considered a fixer upper but I have few complaints. If anything all the work inside and out has given me back a little of my sanity. My only dissapointment being that much of the gardens were raided by certain neighbors after the passing of the original owners. A majority of the gardens were chock full of holes. The daughter of the owners even went as far as to call the cops on the one neighbor and had them dig the plants back up to return them. I think the worst culprit was the landscaper across the street. The lady behind me said she saw him over here with half a dozen of his guys all pushing wheelbarrows. I heard tales of a wonderous rose garden with dozens of species but needless to say there are none now. Fortunately for me many of the species that weren't here the first year have returned this year when I used the compost I collected while giving the place it's first major weeding in what must have been several years. After churning in first year compost into a once empty mound garden I now have a dozen examples of perrenials that didn't exist my first season. Oh how my sanity returns to me. Best of all .... the lovely fragrance of bee balm decayed into the soil. Reminds me of home.
