I have never tried transplanting senna, but i presume it has a large tap root. I would wait until it goes dormant before moving it and then try to save as much tap root as possible. Also collect the seeds if it produces any and give them a go as well.

Hmmm...a six-inch wild senna is blooming? Sounds like there is some common-name confusion going on.

'Wild Senna' usually refers to Senna marilandica, which is a tall, herbaceous legume with compound leaves (looks like black locust or false indigo) and an erect stalk of yellow flowers. This plant is usually 3-6 FEET tall when in bloom.

Kathy, could you be referring to partrige pea, Chamaecrista nictitans, which is sometimes called Cassia (its former genus name), wild senna, or sensitive senna? This is a much smaller plant with delicate compound leaves that look like those of sensitive plant. The flowers look quite a bit like those of wild senna, but they are smaller and occur in smaller groups, not a dense stalk.

If this is indeed the case, the smaller partridge-pea should be easier to transplant. I have not tried to start it from seed, but the seeds probably need to be scarified to allow them to absorm moisture and break dormancy.

Transplanting an annual at this time of year would be futile.

Oops! Rudy's right. If it's partridge pea, you need to wait for seeds. I bet they're easier from seed than the perennial legumes.

Hmm, it could be partridge pea. I assumed wild senna because we have some growing near here (4-6'tall), and the leaves on my volunteer are larger than pp. Maybe I'll pot it up (if the rabbits leave me any), and if I have a 6' tree at the end of winter, I'll know what it is!

i have been having trouhble with this same id. what grows here does not look like either according to my guide. it is about 6-8 inches tall, leaves do NOT react, and the center pistils or stamens (whatever they are called) are a reddish brown/ brownish red. it does set a legume seed.
