groundcover suggestions?

Hi, I am hoping someone has some ideas for a groundcover I can use. The area in question is partly shady - under and around a line of fairly large cottonwoods. It is on a bit of a slope, currently grass. It's hard to mow and the grass really doesn't contribute anything, so I'd like to get rid of the grass and replace it with an easy care groundcover. It's a drainage ditch, so in spring it can be *quite* wet, but later in the summer is not. I would like something that spreads pretty well, and ideally provide food and/or cover for birds/wildlife. We're zone 3 so it must be hardy.

So, summary:

zone 3

partially shaded

wet in spring, dry in summer

wildlife friendly

Any ideas?

Thanks so much.

Ann
