native plant to mid or swampy AL?

At the Birmingham zoo they have a section for native animals and plants; it is mostly a swampy area, so I don't know whether the plants are for the Birmingham area or southern AL. Anyway, they have this beautiful tree, with dark foliage, triangular shape tree, with white flowers that kind of remind me of dogwoods in that the shape is similar. But the center is a bright yellow, like you never see with a dogwood. And it is blooming through the summer, which dogwoods don't do. Any idea what it is? The zoo people I have asked haven't known. I haven't found the zoo horticulturist yet.

Thanks!
