Zimmerman House Gardener

Job Description

2006


Dates: Mid May through Mid October

Time: 2x per week for 3 hours

Hourly rate: $12.00 per hour

Supervisor: Joan Pushee and Hetty Startup

Qualifications: Experienced Gardener who has completed a training course such as Master Gardener or Community Tree Steward Program. Must be sensitive to the requirements imposed by the historic nature of the site and work under the supervision of the site administrator and garden supervisor.

Garden Timeline

Ongoing Tasks

1. Keep beds weed free

2. Water as needed

3. Keep front gardens looking "perfect" to make a good first impression (this includes (remove weeds from driveway, deadheading annuals, keeping pachysandra away from new mugo pine and azaleas making sure it has enough water)

4. Daily walk along paths for any problems

5. Maintain regular communication with Joan Pushee

6. Keep an eye on outdoor planter and beds under eaves for light and moisture

7. Removal of downed twigs and branches

May - Big Perennial Bed

Dig in existing compost (two years worth) and assemble small team to add weed-free compost in stages (Joan)

May - Guest Bedroom Bed

- Remove violets

- Move two astilbe due to size of hosta and clean up stray ferns

- Add cocoa hulls for mulch

May - Driveway Bed

Add 5 variegated vincas for over wall Pull pachysandra from the azaleas

Late May - Set out new annuals, to include nicotiana and heliotrope (see JP and HS below)

May/June-Outdoor Planter

Add soil and vinca in front of the planter (in back of the bed)

May/June-Pachysandra bed - remove day lilies

July/August  Id. and label daylilies (color and bloom date)
