Isn't this plant very toxic?

Only if you eat it.

This is Datura stramonium, commonly called Jimsonweed (jamestown weed) because a group of hungry British soldiers ate the plant and experienced it's toxic effects near Jamestown Virginia in the 1600's.

Should this be removed? I kind of like the look of the plant it has very nice flowers growing on it. The plant has probably doubled in size since this photo has been taken.

No need to remove it but do remove the seed pods before they split open or you will have hundreds of seedlings. The sap from this group of plants can cause a reaction in sensitive people, dilated pupils mostly at low doses. These (the Alkaloids Scopolamine and Atropine) are used as a drug during eye exams and also in motion sickness patches. If you are concerned just wear gloves before you do any trimming.

Datura inoxia and Datura metel are better garden plants because their flowers are large and they open fully. If you want to grow any from seed just remember the seeds need a cold period before they germinate. Sowing in the fall or early spring as soon as the ground has thawed is best.
