trouble gardening with natives

I've been growing native around my house for over five years. In that time, I have planted about fourty different plants, and maybe eight have died - That, I can deal with.

What really irks me is when the plants start laying down.

For years now Tall Sunflower - H.giganteus - has been looking scruffy in front my house all summer, the payoff being thousand of yellow flowers. But at blooming time, the darn thing slumps over, and it looks like a mess. I have also had simular problems with Bee-Balm, Culver's-root, and Brown-eyed Susan -R.triloba. Any suggestions?
