virginia creeper on fencing

if I have a chain link fence and grow virgina creeper on my side, in my yard...not the sidewalk side..will the berries/fruit that are not safe to eat grown on out onto the sidewalk side or will it stay on my side in my yard?

Yes, both sides. Are the berries unsafe to eat though? I'd not heard that. tghey're related to grapes.

what about putting down either a plastic barrier, or heavy thick sheet mulch (cardboard with a lot of straw/leaves/lawn clippings/grass)? or both actually...with the plastic barrier it would be good to not just cover the bottom but even staple them to the bottom of the fence so the roots of the creeper cant cross over. or just...make sure the plastic covers not just the bottom but put it in an L shape against the bottom of the fence and the dirt on top should hold it into place. dig out the area up to the fence, cut out whatever roots are migrating to your side, and then put down plastic or thick layers of cardboard...with mulch/compost and then bag dirt(or screened soil, etc)on the top to cover the cardboard or plastic where the kiwis will go. you would want to add a lot of dirt/mulch/cardboard over the plastic for the kiwis. thats what i would do anyway, actually i do have to do this in some spots...cause i have blackberries going crazy with their world domination plans all around me =) ah eventually the bberries will keep growing in and all around the garden...but digging out the roots(impossible to get them all), and sheet mulch on top holds them back from an area for a few years...i figure the areas i put down plastic underneath the sheet mulch will have a lot longer before the bberries infiltrate...they grow under the plastic though and come out the other side...but ah...at least they are an abundant edible, with no input or fussing over they produce huge amounts of free fruit=) the native bberries are actually pretty cool....but the are mixed in with the hymalayan.

I have quite a lot of VC in my woods, but not to the point of strangling anything or being invasive. The wild grape is much more agressive and harder to control IMHO. If you want more, I'd suggest you air layer the plant you have as it will root at nodes if they come into contact with the ground. It will not be as agressive in the shade, but you should keep an eye on it so as not to injure your smaller tree. I've never seen it do much to a large tree except grow up the trunk. In full shade the fall color is not as vivid, but I still like it. First year you'll have to water as other new plants to get established, then it will pretty much fend for itself.

Virginia creeper is very easy to start from seed. There are berries on mine now, and when they've dried on the vine, I'll collect the berries and peel the berry off the seeds and wintersow them (see the wintersowing forum). The one time I tried to transplant several plants, they all wilted and died within hours, it seemed. Martha

Thanks, Ron. The picture your link lead to is the only one I could find in my searches. I think they are VC. I want to move them as early in their development as possible to minimize root damage and transplant shock. I don't want to wait for true leaves. Pretty demanding, I know. But, I love this vine and these seedlings were dropped into my lap at the base of a huge oak tree inches from my driveway. I'm hoping to use them as camouflage and increased privacy on my long chain-link fence. Thanks again for your time. Martha

I've seen info on the berries range from mildly to highly toxic for humans. I'd assume the worse case... especially for children. Not so important to eliminate the berries, but good to be aware that they are poisonous should some person or pet happen to get into them.

We've had VC covering a 3 ft deep bed and up the 50 ft wide brick veneer wall on the north side of the house where we have to trim it aggressively to keep it from reaching the wooden frieze board and soffit. The full shade and/or regular trimmings result in no berries.... or fall color :-( So it's possible to eliminate the berry risk if it's a concern with the right conditions and a bit of regular work.

There is no question it will grow through to both sides. I've been trying to get some ripe berries for years, but they get eaten so,fast by birds and animals that I never find a ripe one. This year I put little drawstring bags over a few branches so I can collect seed to plant along my fence. Are you concerned about people passing by picking the berries and eating them? IMO if someone is old enough to be walking by unsupervised, they should have been taught not to eat strange berries in other people's yards. You shouldn't have to worry about them.

I totally agree, but that's just not how it is here. Even though our crime rate is above the nat'l average little kids get to roam the neighborhood doing what they want basically.

So I'd be dealing with little kids probably picking these

I've been letting VC run wild on my garage for the past few years and it's almost completely covered at this point. I have a lot of bird traffic in my yard, so the berries don't last too long.
