Smart garden plans should account primarily for foliage instead of flowers since the majority of perennials only bloom for a few weeks and it's the foliage you look at the rest of the year. To say that foliage is only for shade is to hint that you have no faith in finding flowers for the shade garden, IMO. Plan your garden before you put anything in - layout your planting arrangement on paper accounting for the full grown size of the plants. Don't buy anything until after you've taken your notebook and toured your local gardens - botanical if you have any, neighbors, garden society tours, local high-end nurseries, etc. Decide what you LOVE, make a note of its characteristics and draw it into your plan. Then start small and be patient. To me, the smaller plants suffer less transplant shock and are therefore more likely to survive the move into your garden. There is a world of possibility which only your personal preference can begin to narrow down. Find an inspiration, develop a vision as to the purpose/use may be for this garden and plan plan plan so you don't have to dig up and move around (like I do - LOL). Variety is the spice of life and for some of us the look of a carnival upon which a rainbow just threw up is exciting, to others it's disconcerting and only you can decide where the line is drawn.

Nicole, your hib could have mites, or lack of iron..If you suspect pests, look over the entire plant and check for webbing. Mites weave fine webbing similiar to the house spider but finer. BTW, there are other bugs hibs can get like mealy. White cottony patches. Inspect the plant and look for anything that shouldn't be there. Over and Under-watering causes leaves to yellow too..You want the soil to dry between waterings; Hibs do not like wet feet. If veins are a deep green and leaf is yellow it could be a mineral defincincy. If this is the case, add iron. Yes, Rose of Sharon is in the Hib family..If given full sun it shouldn't weep. A warning about ROS..I don't know if it's seed or cuttings, but I've got them growing everywhere..LOL. When this happens pluck at an early age..or they'll take over and they're really hard to lift. I don't envy you right now..digging up hibs..they make look bad at first, but should do fine after time. You'll have to dig deep to get all the roots though..Toni

Also, even though the stems are long and thin, they are very strong and not floppy. They're kind of similar in appearance to tall garden phlox, but the flower heads are smaller. They also reseed themselves very nicely-they're not garden thuggy at all. Mine's in a tiny bed by itself this year, but I like your idea of mixing it with the milkweed. Although you don't want to mix a thickly growing plant with your milkweed, one that I have found that really attracts zillions of butterflies is blue mist flower. It spreads from the roots and will take over an area. But it's easy to pull out because the roots are very shallow. It blooms from early Spring to late fall and has fuzzy looking sky blue flower heads and bright light-green foliage. For being on the verge of thugism, it's really a pretty butterfly attractor. Cheryl
