Some the immature heads of some forms of yellow yarrow start out white, and they have silvery leaves. I don't think these are natives, though. I think our only native yarrow is A. millefolium, whereas the yellow ones are A. filipendulina or hybrids of it.

The flower heads on my A. millefolium Paprika are all white.

These yarrow seems to have very weak stems even before the thunderstorms over the weekend. This is first year with them but they were in gallon containers with tons of roots when planted in Fall. I have to admit that when I planted in the Fall I didn't know that I had to cut the circled roots so plants didn't expend all their energy on trying to break out of the tangle and grow normally. Same thing has happened with Lupine.

Would anyone here suggest I dig up Yarrow and Lupine in JUNE to check roots to see if they need a little untangling or sharp cuts so they can spread normally??

If people with a ton more experience than I have think it'll help I'll bite the bullet even though I fear killing a plant when I have to dig it up since I'm flying by the seat of my pants this year.

Let me know your experience especially with the A. millefolium. Saw them in all nurseries and they were strong stemmed upright plants...not weak and floppy like mine. I read that I shouldn't feed them and not water too much. Is that correct? They haven't been fed at all this year but I've been resisting the urge for a quick fix for fear I'd just make matters worse.

I know enough to know more water and fertilizer don't "cure" every weak plant but can do more damage than good especiall for certain species...just hard for a newbie to know the difference so dependent on internet searches for information.

Hope forums can give me experience instead of theory without first hand experience!

newbie, the yarrow cultivar 'Paprika' isn't a native plant. Paprika, although I haven't grown any in quite some time, always flopped. And they certainly weren't white. I'm not sure what you've got. I do know though, that root bound plants never do well (if I can help it, I won't buy them). I wouldn't do it on a sunny day, but on an overcast day, dig them up and gently untangle the roots, or cut them with a shape spade. Not much kills that plant. Lupinus perennis is a native lupine. Do you know what your plant is? I've never had lupines, so I can't really tell you anything about them. Perhaps the perennial forum will be of greater help to you than the native forum for these particular plants?
