New Garden in Spring

The heat has done it's damage to my gardens despite heavy watering on my part. They look like the end of August. So I thought I would post pictures of a healthier time.

Last year I cleared an empty space in the back of a sun garden and planted two "theme" gardens in the ares. They are separated by a curved walkway. This is not nearly as elaborate as some of the fantastic gardens we have seen here, but I want to show my efforts too since I got a lot of suggestions for plants from the members here.

Down the left side is my Beatles Garden.

The plants are (in no particular order)

Paul's Glory, Sun Power (for George who wrote Here Comes the Sun), Drummer Boy (Ringo), Julia (John's mother) Sgt Pepper, Lovely Rita, Rock and Roll, Abby, Revolution, Liverpool White, London Fog, Sea Octopus, Yellow Submarine and Yesterday's Memories.

This picture is taken from the other end and has the "Star Trek" garden on the left. This is planted for my husband, a long time trekkie!

This garden has Captain Kirk, Vulcan, Starboard Light, First Mate (since there is no hosta named Number One), Stardust, Lunar Orbit, Dark Star, Galaxy Light, Moongate Flying Saucer and Planet X.

Both pictures were taken in the early summer after they had all come up. There are also astible, ferns and huchera planted among the hosta.

What a great garden, and I loved your theme Hostas. What fun! I have one theme garden going for my darlin' man that I lost almost 2 years ago. If I can I will try and post it. And I think I will try and start another one. That is such a great idea. (and what a great excuse to invesst in more Hosta)

Chris, I like it. My husband is into old cars and trucks and I was giving him some of the names. He thought it was cool. I told him I would get some if he found me more room. Boy, did I get a funny look!

You are asking about "what to plant" but have you figured out where you should be planting? Looking at your picture I am curious about that gate and how it fits in with your house. Do many people use that gate? Is there a path to your front door? I am also wondering how your lawn looks during the summer. Are you struggling to grow grass in this area or it that just the time of year that the picture was taken? You have what looks like a cozy enclosed space. How do you like to use this area? In a lot of ways the question "what should I plant?" is about the same as "what should I where?" Are you going to the beach, a night club or to the office? When you go out do you like to wear jeans or a formal outfit? Without knowing you, your style or what you want your front yard to become it is hard to come up with recommendation on what you should plant. I would suggest hitting the library looking for books on shade gardening and borders. You could also jump over to Google and do an image search on phrases like "shade garden" and see if something jumps out at you. - Brent

Yes, my mom did this in her garden and it made it easier to dig in the spring. As I recall, we laid the newspaper (regular pages, soy-based ink)one or two sheets thick and anchored it with big rocks. The snow covered it all winter; it was in an area where it can't be seen from the house. In spring she chopped it all up and planted. I think adding mulch and leaves on top would be helpul.

Starting compost pile

Mack ...I found an old gardenweb thread about composting with straw. You will note that many of the posters shred their straw before adding to compost pile. I hope you will also consider using torn newspaper/cardboard, used coffee grounds along with your kitchen scraps and horse manure. Sounds like you have all the 'makings' for some awesome compost! Planning new rose garden for spring...how to kill the grass?

My experiences: Round Up kills the grass and weeds grow back. It will be weeds in the spring. Annoying. Also, lots of neighbor kids (toddlers and preschoolers), including my own kids, run through my lawn and I don't want to be the jerk who poisoned them. Digging and turning the soil is heavy work and a fine way to go, but it will till up seeds and you will have to keep weeding out grass and weed babies for some time. My usual method, but that's in the middle of the summer when I am off work and have the time and energy. I had my happiest success with the lasagne method. Very very fertile in the spring and not as many problems with weeds as you might expect. A lot of work, but I think worth it. I don't have much time this fall so I am thinking of covering the grass with thick wet newspaper then covering that with mulch (maybe a layer decomposing material from my compost bin before the mulch, but I don't have much yard waste yet). The grass will die and in the spring I can pull back the mulch where I want to plant. Hopefully it will be easier than digging and I will have fewer weed problems than with other methods. Good luck! Fun themes, and attractive combos on their hosta merits, too. Please share pictures as they grow. It will be spectacular!

My hosta that get the most sun are looking pretty "August" already, too. I was thrilled when everything emerged so early, but now I learn that there's a price for that. :(

I bought Elvis Lives, & GunSmoke, for my hubby.
Elvis is a beautiful hosta.
I have always wanted to do a Beatles Theam Garden, I still may.

Hey Chris,
For automatic larger photos, in photobucket, under UPLOAD IMAGES AND VIDEO, click on more options. Then click on 15" screen and save. Then, when you upload photos it will automatically make them this size

Rosie, that was part of the plan, make him his own garden so he can;t complain, he really doesn't anyway.

Do it Carol! Start with my list, take any you want and let me know if you find other plants. I have a statue in there, just one so far, it is Rocky Raccoon. but I can't find the picture of him right now.
