Interesting comments/suggestions above. I would, however, question the statement that garden phlox are usually (interspecific) hybrids. Taking the "garden phlox" to refer to Phlox paniculata, few are hybrids. According to 'Phlox: An Explanation (www. theprimrose path. com)', "surprisingly few of the phlox garden cultivars of this group (the Paniculata-Maculata Group) are hybrids". This fits with information given on-line for a few Phlox paniculata cultivars; namely that they originated as mutations or stem mutations. For instance, 'David' was a mutation (sport) discovered in a garden situation and 'Peppermint Twist' was a stem mutation discovered in a commercial horticultural one. In addition, the seedlings of fertile cultivars tend to show reversion (by reverse mutation) back to the ancestral wild type. And in the case of the sterile cultivar 'Peppermint Twist', stem reversions seem to occur, with unusual frequency, back to the parental 'Candy Floss'. pippi, I had to get a new kb and already spilled just a small amt of hot fudge sauce I made on the space bar. Well, I took off the keypad and lucky I got it back on at all, can't get it seated right. But it works, just not quiet like the other keys. Knew I was playing with fire. Only $49 plus tax from apple online, wasn't on display, salesman had to hunt for one. But the darn function keys are messed up. I thought it was something I did but after 2 days, I got the check box right and plugged in the old kb and the fn keys work right on the old, not the new. So I hope they have an update for this kb because I use the sound keys a lot. It's a newer generation, one key different, and didn't want wireless even if it would have been compatible. I know I was being picky about my butterfly photos, am thrilled to have gotten anything, they look nice to me in small sizes, but bigger, you can see some blur & other things I'd like to get better. I saw some on pro photos, too, they flutter their wings so fast. But some of mine is you don't want to know, a combo of things. Just blasted a fly on my numeric keypad with my hand. 0123456789=/ that seems ok. My, my reflexes are fast for pushing 70 here shortly. Sometimes I can catch stuff that falls in mid air. I noticed my phlox have some round green globules, look like peas only about half, have to be seed pods but don't know when they are ripe, will look for brownish and like they're going to pop open. After seeing they attract butterflies (ignored my echinacea) and how easily they self seed, I'm rather enchanted with them. I think I will cheat and get some of the colors at BS and hope I live long enough to see some interesting crosses from the colors. I think that last photo I posted was a bad cross and ought to yank it so it doesn't keep crossing. I was surprised by the volunteers so don't know if they bloom the first summer or took 2 years. Poor David was almost wilted away right under the sunroom windows where it dries out very fast so I gave it some water, forgot to check it today. That's enough to trouble you with. I will be checking different phlox varieties. Mine look pretty spent now, wish I knew if they rebloom if you deadhead. Problem is I pinch when they're about 1 foot so I get more branching and blooms but take about 2 weeks longer to come into bloom. The Monarda didn't detectably cooperate with pinching other than giving me magnificent blooms compared to past 2 years.

it does take a while to get a tall phlox to expand like this but once it gets going yummmm I allow mine to self propergate by cutting spent flowers and tucking them into the middle of the stems as the leaves wilt I add a handfull or two of there garden soil with the leaves and tap it in to the base I then let the stems stand as is untill 2 inches of leaf is seen in springcreating new stems I then cut the old stems and dig it up and seperate it into sections of size of four or five each and return them with in division back into garden.. You can do this divison into a 2 quart pot as well. I would assume your method looks correct but a guess would be concidering rotting hormone as it is a step for cuttings on different own root growers from one single tall phlox I got 3 stalks taking two years years the following year I got 5 stems on the forth 3 more every year after I now get an avg 6 stem from three second generation talls in two different but close spots next spring I am going to say yummmmmmmmm I predict a total of 36 which will all get a 5 to 6 stalk split from the second generation stems and 6 from the inital one which will get split into 3 stalks good luck on your efforts on propergating that way

Well I have been wanting white, but I certainly did not expect to get one that way:) no one seems to grow perrenials in my neighborhood due to the deer and there's no phlox at all other then mine so I am very pleased to have it. glad I did not throw those bits away. ( i have deer sprinklers which is why i have plants and the neighbors don't)
