Northern Illinois Hosta Garden Tour, Day 2

Yesterday was another delightful day spent touring 3 wonderful gardens. Two belong to Hosta Forum members and the other is my sister Rita's garden.

We had a total of 17 in our group. People came from all over Northern Illinois and the suburbs. We even had another HF member (hostared) Gloria come from near the Indiana border to be with us.

What a gracious hostess (1morehosta) Carol was by providing tea,lemonade, and donuts for all of us. Her secluded garden, nestled in the woods, outside of

Oregon IL, was where we all came together to start our 3 garden tour.

I will be posting separate pictures of each garden. Enjoy.

hi warhawk... the green and gold hosta society is based out of green bay...here is their schedule for this year... june 9th and 10th,,,1 member is having a personal garden walk and plant sale at her house june 16th,,,the green and gold society hosta sale is at one of the members houses... there are 3 chit chats held at different members places...so you can see 3 more yards...those are scheduled june 20,,,july 11,,,and august 1 august 7th is their roadtrip to oshkosh to visit 4 gardens, have lunch, and go shopping at 1 garden center... september 8th there is a sale at the green bay botanical gardens with lots of vendors....not just hostas... you can inquire about membership to: Karen VandenHeuvel W1842 Culbertson Road Seymour, WI 54165 dues are $8 per person or $12 for families per year ____________ there is also the "Wisconsin Hosta Society" based in Madison maybe you would like to check them out also... Awesome, and well documented, Myrle. Faye may be new to the hosta game, but she is no newbie at gardening. I recognized one of the rocks in the bed she created last fall I think it was, and if it disappears, you might want to check south Alabama for it. It is fantastic to notice the size of the equipment she uses or maybe her DH uses, to achieve the results. Her DH is an award winning enabler who is gracious in hauling in loads of soil and mulch and rocks and who knows what else. Then I noticed the trench which looks like a possible water pipe to the bed. The scale of everything is appropriate to the expansive landscape and the general environment of the location in Canada. I am inspired by all three gardens presented. I am also enamored of the British Colombia area, and hope one day to experience it for myself. When we take the "Orient Express" ....really Amtrak across the continent from east to west northern route, that is one area we absolutely MUST visit.

The horticultural name for Bleeding Heart Vine, or Glory Bower, is Clerodendrum Thomsoniae, in case anyone wants to hunt one up. They are hardy to zone 10 -LOL- but can be grown in pots or hangers and wintered indoors for the rest of us. There is also a much hardier shrub, but with different flowers- sort of like skinny lacecap hydrangeas in maroon/pink.

I do have to admit I was more in acquisition mode than browsing mode. I had done extensive online research and knew what I wanted. My wagon was full in 15 minutes and I wanted to get home in time to plant. Next year I'll take my time and enjoy the experience more. Of course I say that about everything. Might be a personal problem. ;) Next year we'll take that big vacation. At a party a friend asked my husband "What are you doing for fun these days?" Doug starred at him blankly and said, "I have a garden." Kathy

If the pictures are any indication - Looks like a fantastic garden tour...and I have never seen Hosta Spilt Milk that big!

I KNEW IT was CAROL'S place, from the very first pic.!!!! Whaaa! I wanna be there!!!! Really fantastic, Carol!!!

I gotta tell you guys, this was SO much fun, i encourage all of you to meet up with a hosta friend and make a couple of days of it,
We got to see the most beautiful gardens,every one has their own way of displaying them,a real treat, and every one is so nice.

Janice, Oh how I wished you could have been here, i did think of you,and wished we could see your garden as well,how far away from me are you?We just gotta meet!That's all there is to it!!!!!

Thank you Connie and Phil for posting these great pictures,my camera was not working, so i did not get any,and the gardens are gorgeous.I hope we can do this every year.Come one come all.

What really blows my mind is that the oldest of Carol's hosta are only 5 or 6 years old!!!!! Carol and Wayne built their home themselves and have lived there only 7 years. She has fantastic soil for it being overgrown woods when they started building. She adds nothing to it. She does water she told me. Amazing!

Ahhh, my detective work has failed! I put the 'red' together with the 'hair' of the one in the pic.
and gathering you (Gloria--hostared) were there--came to a conclusion that was WRONG!!

I'm SO fired, as desk detective!!!LOL

ya know.. the president of the AHS is in north chi town area... the link to the hosta patch is below ... he is actually doing the journal write up on my tour garden ....

your little group is probably getting bigger than the actual club..

do any of you belong ... maybe you ought to take over the group...

Ken, I do belong to the AHS,but not to any local,but would love to be part of one.
I tried a couple of years ago to find the Mid West club, but the closest was Chicago.To far for me.

Any ideas?
