All 300 of mine looked like that last year. I just left mine alone and they all came back that the moles/voles didn't eat the roots. This year we used liquid fence. Stinks to high heaven, but seems to be working so far. Maybe a few nibbles just recently. Choco lab eats the irish spring soap when I put it out. Protect the rest cause the deer don't forget where they had a good meal.

Gee, Von--300 of them--unfathomable! I think I would have been camping out in a tent
and racing out screaming when they returned!! Might not have worked on the deer--but I bet
the neighbors would be vigilant from then on! :o)

I am seriously trying not to cry. That had to be horrible to find. I am so glad you got the before picture. I'm just sick about it as if it were my own. I was going to ask if you've ever seen a more spectacular June? I think it even looked like a sport with the wide dark margins.

Don't they smell your dog in your yard? Can you get something scary that moves or makes noise when it detects motion?

What a shame. That sure was a pretty June. Wow, Von 300 eaten. I probably would have had a stroke watching that happen. I'm glad most of yours returned.

hey_j - i have to say it was a shock - it had showed up so well beside my shed and then there were just these spikes - kinda had to look again...and again!

regattagirl - no dog.... there's my mistake... Yes, I dug up 2 Striptease and put them in the trash - that was harder I think because I am optimistic - as all gardeners need to be - for next year for June. I didn't post pics of the S&S, Frances Wms and GE that had been attacked once before & now have about the same appearance....

I have been spraying Deer Solution almost weekly when it says it lasts for weeks. I liked the cinnamon smell so much bettter than Bobbex or other foul ones. Guess the deer did too!

First let me say I am so terrible sorry for you. Your June was beautiful. Second, I bought Deer Off at HD, didn't stink at all and has worked fantastically. I don't know exactly what is in it to do the trick but I can't smell anything foul when I spray it. I'm one of those sensitive to scents too. I had a few deer attacks on my new bed, lost some dl, lily and dahlia to them. I sprayed this and it has kept them out since. I am still seeing deer tracks in the woods but the are not venturing through this bed any more.

Oh dear - or is that oh deer- my sympathy goes out to you. Reminds me somewhat of what I experienced last year with Striptease my two Rotties denuded in their quest for green matter. This year the little b.i.t.c.h has gone after one of my Sum and Substance and while it doesn't look like a bunch of sticks poking out of the ground, you do have to use your imagination to be able to tell it's an S&S.

All I can do is add my condolences. I had a very similar problem a couple of years ago despite that I have a Doberman who has free roam of the yard. I'm sure my yard smells of dog, but it has never deterred the deer.

Liquid Fence, Milorganite, etc will all work for a wile. Reapply often and after every rain.

Keep them well watered, don't remove anything else and they will be back next year.

Boo Hoo is right!!!! What a bummer, and what a fabulous June. She will return even grander next year. As Ken, it is a hosta. And neither deer, nor snow, nor hail (?), nor dead of night will keep them from delivering. So I borrowed a line from the USPS, who cares?!?!?!?!?!? HA!
