Today one of the wood lilies I planted this spring opened up. It's very tiny maybe one foot or less. Here are two pictures I just took. Sarah

Hi Stacette, I looked on the web for Gray's lily. What a beautiful flower! Fraser Thimble Farms listed it for sale last year. (http://www.thimblefarms.com/sbulb3.html) Their 2005 plant list will come out in July. They were't cheap ($7.50/bulb) but you could buy one bulb that you use for scaling and get a lot of lilies, (as long as you don't mind waiting for them to mature to get blooms). Also the Boston Natural Areas Network "City Natives Nursery" sells both of the lilies you are interested in (in 1 quart pots) though it looks like it is "pick-up" sales only. (http://www.bostonnatural.org/nursery_catalog.php) Got any friends in Boston? You might also want to contact the Species Lily Preservation Group. They have a page on the North American Lily Society website (www.lilies.org) just click on the link "Lily Societies". They hold a bulb sale every Fall for their members and make seed available. They have a list of their officers with contact info. Maybe they can tell you if they are going to offer the lilies you're interested in this Fall. Membership is $12/year. Depending on the cost of bulbs and the number you were planning on getting - this might mean a net savings to you. -Helen

Check with the nursery linked below. The owner, Don Jacobs, propagates all of the plants he sells, none are wild collected. He has an extensive listing of Trillium and grows the Wood Lily and Gaywings, but not sure he offers them for sale. If not, he can possibly recommend a reliable source. Best to Fax or Email your requests or post a letter, as he lives alone, spends most of the day in his garden and retires early, so it's sometimes difficult to make contact via telephone. Where did you get yours? I've wanted some to replace all the ditch lilies I've ripped out, but can't find an online source with the wood lilies (and the Canada lilies) in stock.

Thanks, it's botanical name is Lilium philadelphicum. I bought them at Fairweather Gardens in Greenwich Cumberland county N.J. I ordered them back in January or Febuary also I ordered some from Plants Delight in North Carolina but they are really small and I don't know if they will survive. The Canada lily I bought at Bowman's Wildflower Preserve native plant sale three years ago They also carry them locally at redbud native plant nursery. Hope that helps The wood lily in particular was hard to find and sells out fast. Sarah

I love this little plant. When I was a boy in southern NY state I would go to the old fields in our woods to see its lovely blossoms. It's great you're growing some. Thanks for the photos. PF

ive seen this before, i pulled it up on the side of a mountain road in west virginia, i had two, one bulb was eaten by squirrels and the other died off :(
