native solomon's seal - please help!

i just planted three native solomon's seal that came from a mail order. the plants are a good size and look great. watered them after planting. today (one day later) they look horrible. limp and yellowing. any ideas? too much water? too little? planted too deep?? i desperately do not want to loose these plants!

Did you plant them out in the sun and wind? A new plant needs time to adjust to its new home before being exposed to the elements. Also, if bare-rooted, this type of plant really should be planted when dormant or just beginning to sprout. Cover them with milk jugs (without the lids) or something similar for a few days, mist them often, and hope for the best.

Hi,

My own experience has been that many of the native woodland plants that I have put in die back the year I plant them and reappear the following spring. That has been my experience even with some that aren't ephemeral.

Here's a photo from 3 years ago. The Heuchera haven't thrived here, but that is probably due to their being a favorite of the voles rather than problems with the Solomon's seal. The small leaves are Veronica 'Georgia Blue', and it has continued to weave around the feet of the SS. Both the peony and the Siberian Iris have tough enough roots to keep the SS from taking over. There is a Cimicifuga/Actea behind the SS, but there is some space so that the Actea has room to spread. I had to dig it up once and didn't want to have to do that again as it also has tough roots. I'll see if I can get a photo of this today.

I would hardly call the flowers of Solomon's seal tiny. Admittedly they are not very showy, but they average about 1" long on most of my established plants. I have a large raised square bed around a black walnut tree in the middle of my drive, and they reach about 4' tall competing easily with the large hosta seiboldiana filling the bed with them. They are actually starting to smother out some of the hosta plants. The foliage is gorgeous and graceful as well and the berries add a nice accent later in the season. George

It will spread, but on its own, very slowly. The berries are highly favored by critters, so its not a prolific re-seeder. Sometimes I help mine along, by picking the berries, pressing them into the soil, and covering with leaf litter. It gives the seeds a bit of protection from the rabbits. Though I think the chipmunks and squirrels may still be able to find, they just are less likely...

i agree with jcsgreenthumb. though i haven't planted solomon's seal, my jack in the pulpit planted 2 years or more ago is coming up right now. it is also very small compared to full size. maybe you will get a surprise next spring.

thanks for the encouragement. this is a new garden and i've been very lucky with all my plantings. it just happened so suddenly (the limping and yellowing). hopefully it perks back up this year or perhaps re-appears next as some of you mention.

I can't speak for solomon's seal, but mt FALSE Solomon's seal withered away to nothing pretty quickly last spring and I mourned it's loss and felt vaguely guilty. But it's back now! Yay!
