Solomon's seal information

Good morning everyone. I was out in the woods this morning checking on the native plants that I bought from the Master Gardner sale earlier this year. The Solomon's Seal looks beautiful. Will it spread or do I need to add more to make a stand of them?

It will spread, but on its own, very slowly. The berries are highly favored by critters, so its not a prolific re-seeder.

Sometimes I help mine along, by picking the berries, pressing them into the soil, and covering with leaf litter. It gives the seeds a bit of protection from the rabbits. Though I think the chipmunks and squirrels may still be able to find, they just are less likely...

I have a ton of them, but they were all here when I moved in seven years ago. Every year, I find more and more seedlings. They do take a couple years, I suspect, before reaching flowering size. If you have a lot of patience, wait and they will spread. But if you want more now! then plant more.

I love this plant.

Solomon's Seal is an amazing plant! There are two key ways to propagate the plant: from seed, and root separation. Under a normal time frame, it is best to sow the seeds of the Solomon's Seal in august, when the seeds are collected. This will give them a very natural incubation period. Also, this is when root divisions should be made. In your case (wanting to start them early), the seeds can be soaked in warm water for about an hours. After they are thoroughly soaked, place the seeds in a plastic bag containing a mix of perlite and vermiculite (some people prefer to use sphagnum moss.) Add a small amount of water to the bag, squeeze out any air in order to reduce rot, then place the bag in the refrigerator for about two months. After that time, take the seeds and sow them in a pot in a sunny, warm location. Maintain a humid environment, and you should see germination shortly after! Good luck! Let me know how it goes! If it's only that one branch of your Solomon's Seal, I wouldn't worry about it. Just cut it off. The rest of the plant looks healthy. Could have yellowed from any number of reasons, but it looks like isolated damage. Should come back fine next year. :-)

Nice plants, Rouge. Have several Solomon's seals ourselves. Bought (full sized) Polygonatum multiform (EurAsian Solomon's seal; presumably rather the hybrid) years back and have moved quite a bit of it since then. I like it's height at the back of a mixed perennial beds (compared to the lower heights and/or more open habits of other perennials, we have, that bloom at the same time). I've always cut back all Solomon's seal after it's bloomed. Hence transplanting involves just sections of tubers with a bud or two. Transplants have always produced bloom the next season. Below (late May): previously thinned out and replanted.

Goodness, if Soloman's Seal is happy..it will spread like crazy...not necessarily by seed, but by rhizome. I'm over-run with it, LOL!

my solomon's deal is dead! it bloomed and looked lovely (as it has for many years) and quite suddenly turned yellow and died. help please

Do you have voles - plant eating critters that tunnel underground? You might want to dig down and take a look at the roots.
