Basic question re: improving soil in the fall

Hi -

I have clay soil that I improved this year with peat humus and manure (more humus than manure).

Now, I'm putting my perennials in.

I see that some folks on the list recommend adding soil improvements every fall. Sounds good -- EXCEPT what do you do about the existing perennials?

Do you just use a trowel and dig the humus in by hand around the plants?

Add layers of organic matter (your choice) to the surface of the soil and let the worms do the work. Seriously. They are perfectly capable of 'tilling' in several inches of organic matter per year. The secret is to not disturb the soil anymore than you have to.

SO! Soil improving can occur all year round with very little effort from you. Ain't that nice?

Agree with Rhizo. Once you have planted, the soil no longer needs to be disturbed beyond yanking the odd weed or digging a hole for a new plant.

Simply mulch your garden with something organic. It could be a layer of shredded leaves which are often freely available in the fall as the trees drop them, or it could be a softwood, shredded mulch, or it could simply be a half inch to inch of compost spread around. It really doesn't matter as long as it is organic it all gets into the soil with no help from us.

If you do not have a compost pile and don't wish to have one, you can also recycle your kitchen scraps by putting them on the soil surface. Basically 'in place composting'. If you have a mulch layer you can simply tuck the scraps under it to 'keep up appearances'. Spares the landfill and makes for happy plants, plus it's free.

Josh~ thanks for that imput, I was thinking the same thing about the coco fiber, but wasn't sure. I put a small spider plant in some of that soil today, It was getting root bound anyway, so far I'm not sure I am overly impressed with it. It is supposed to be organic. But until I can get some bark/peat moss and more perlite, I'm kinda stuck. Or I should say, my plants are stuck, with what I've got. Been thinking of just the peat moss and perlite w/out the bark~ would that work for the cacti? What would be the ratio for that? 1 moss-2 perlite? I really don't know... I am still trying to find the soil that works for me and my plants, so far I like the 5-1-1 mix, but for me it is more like 2-1-1, and it seems to work. Problem is finding the Fir/Pine Bark. (and we live in the moutanin area! go figure)I can't seem to find anyone that carries it w/out a lot of other stuff in it. The only place I have found is the Pet stores for reptiles, and that is getting very pricy. I am going to keep an eye on my Spider for a while, see how it does in this soil, hope for the best..but as far as the other plants go, I'm going to wait to get the mix I like. Like I said, it is just a small plant. Sure is picky tho, one day it is white & droopy, like it is dying, next it is bright green and looking real good.. don't know what is up with that, but that is for another time and thread.. ;) Thanks for all the info and imput on this, helps me a lot in my thinking of re-potting (since the term re-soiling is confusing-- lol) Thanks again Marjie :)

ibuzzard - yes, constantly adding organic matter after harvest before the next crop. To speed things up bring in a lot of organic matter as manure + bedding to compost in piles set aside from the current gardening beds. Then after harvest rake those on to the beds if you let some lay fallow or put what is crumbling & dark brown on beds you plan to replant right away. It takes awhile to build enough compost to cover all the beds at all times, but with diligence you can do it. The small animal manures like chicken & rabbits are potent, but not the quantity you'd need. Get a hold of some horse manures and you'll be able to speed up the process. Ten years of using chicken, duck & rabbit manures from our backyard animals (Plus liberal amounts of used coffee grounds + shredded leaves mown over on the lawn in fall. Plus our kitchen waste compost bin contents.)... didn't up the soil organic matter content as much as when we started adding horse manure as well composting first in piles or spreading in fall on fallow beds. Volume made a huge difference though I was quite skeptical in the beginning, afraid of weeds & then learned about the herbicide residue in some hay fed to livestock. I made sure we used manure from horses fed alfalfa hay instead. Now after at least 3 years of horse manures we no longer need 6-12 inches of it added in the fall to break down. The soil is light, fluffy and diggable with hands rather than pickaxe like before.

My garden wouldn't SURVIVE without my floating row covers!!! They not only keep off insect pests, but also keep deer & groundhogs off my crops (& I have a groundhog hole right smack in the middle of the garden - lol). Since VA is hot & humid in the summer, I bought the lightweight row covers intended for insect prevention, as opposed to the heavier weights meant for frost protection. I cover all my crops except for my caged tomatoes, & fasten them around each raised bed with pins specifically meant for that purpose, as well as with bricks, rocks, etc. The important thing is to allow a LOT of slack so that the plant(s) can grow & push the fabric up without resistance. Plants that require pollination, like peppers, eggplant, squash, etc., get uncovered during the day once flower buds form, but are recovered at night. Plants that don't need pollination, like root crops & greens, are covered all the time except when harvesting. Works more than perfectly for me.

While many tell you that you need something called "topsoil" they also fail to tell you what they mean by "topsoil". "Topsoil" is defined as the top 4 to 6 inches of soil from someplace and it may be something worth using or it most likely will not be. Many of those I talk with think "topsoil" and loam are the same thing, they are not. An ideal garden soil would be a mixture of about 95 percent mineral (the sand, silt, and clay particles) and about 5 percent organic matter. If you really could get about 50 percent organic matter mixed into the soil you could have a bog, a soil that holds too much water and causes plants to drown. The soil I have gardened in here for years is Lake Michigan beach sand and even by adding what some consider extremely large amounts of organic matter I have not been able to get the level of OM in the soil above about 8 percent, and that has been ideal. Plants evolved eons ago getting nutrients from the Soil Food Web, those wee critters that convert organic matter into something plants can use. Dumping fertilizer onto soil to feed plants is something only about 200 years, or so, old, much too new to really do the job of feeding plants since they have not adapted yet. Feed the soil and the soil will feed the plants. Mel's Mix is basically a soilless potting mix and it needs a lot of perlite, or vermiculite, to provide proper drainage because it is all organic matter and would tend to hold moisture too well. kimmq is kimmsr.

Abbie,

If you wish to improve your soil as rapidly as possible then don't think of fall as the time, all year is the time.

Keep the bed mulched with organic material so it is breaking down all year. The mulch will keep the soil more evenly moist and this will keep the soil critters (bacteria, fungi, worms etc) working all the time improving the soil.

If your bed isn't the type where mulch is practical during the growing season (heavily planted, close spacing) then simply get in the habit of taking all the kitchen scraps (not meat or dairy though) and scattering it on the soil. Fruit, veggy, egg shells, coffee/tea grounds all work well

DITTO! I grow in very hard (red) clay soil, as well, and have found it to be far less of a problem than I anticipated. We till in a substantial amount of organic matter into the beds as we create them and then keep a layer of organic mulch on the soil surface at all times.

In your email to me, you mentioned that you did not have a lot of worms, but you may have more than you think! After a rainfall, they come jumping out of that hard clay of mine, all over the place!
