Moles don't eat Hosta, voles do. Moles eat grubs and earthworms. Did you dig one up to see what was there? If it was voles you would see the roots and crown eaten away. Another thing you might see is little tunnels in the mulch or holes alongside a cement patio or walkway. Did you mulch heavily? Voles like that. It allows them to move about easily without being seen. If I think I have voles I usually check by putting a piece of apple under a broken pot and covering it up well. Put it out at sundown and check it in the morning. Voles will have consumed it or eaten it partially. If you are sure voles are the problem you can do several things. 1. You can trap them. This has limited effect since they breed faster than rabbits. Voles are a major food source for Hawks, Fox, Owls and other predators so they depend on an amazing rate of procreation to survive. 2. You can poison them. This can be effective, but it's dangerous, especially if you have pets. Some people dump poison down a hole and put a rock over it, but the directions on the poison specifically prohibit that as a safe use of their product. The other thing is that predators who eat poisoned voles consume that poison also. There are research reports that show evidence of poison in the systems of Red Tail Hawks. 3. You can go to Dollar Tree and buy a $1 wire wastebasket and plant your Hosta inside that. Leave the rim of the basket one inch above the soil line. This will prevent voles from eating the crown of your plants and they will live to grow for another year. 4. You can try the new systemic tablets from Repellex. I haven't tried these yet, but my sister likes them. You plant a tablet or two in the root system of the Hosta and it makes the whole plant roots, leaves, and flower scape taste like hot sauce. So very sorry to hear about your grand daughter. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. If she liked rock and roll type of music there are many choices. I love metallica and that sort of name. There are many hostas with a religious connotation with names like blue angel and all the sports, ie, guardian angel. I also have the following hostas in my religious theme bed: glory, american halo, blue vision,eternity, sunshine glory, holy mole, praying hands, awakening angel, paradise glory,noah's rainbow, saint paul, paul's glory, inspire greatness, stained glass, cathedral windows,and unforgettable.

You can never go wrong with a trip up to Longwood, if you've got the time. Their exhibits are jaw-dropping any time of the year. Ladew Gardens in Monkton, Md is also nice, especially if you want to see some cool topiary. Lastly, my husband and I just day-tripped to Winchester, Va yesterday and visited the Museum of the Shenandoah... We were surprised to find some lovely, diverse and enchanting gardens on the grounds of the Glen Burnie House, which are adjacent to the grounds of the museum.

Impressive! They occasionally offer “zoo manoo” at our KC Zoo. I’ve never gone to get any... I think you’d probably need a pickup truck to haul it and I don’t have one. But my son does... hmmmm maybe I can enlist him sometime.
