I'll be generous and assume the HD person was referring to houseplants :-) As noted, tulips are NOT houseplants (but frequently sold as potted plants for indoor color) and will tolerate very cold temperatures without problems. Even cut tulips in warm, household situations will open their flowers very wide in response to higher temps than they are accustomed to and low light levels. btw, you will NOT have additional flowers this season - one bulb = one flower stalk per season. They will need time to regenerate energy to repeat flower next season, although most hybrid tulips are not reliable perennializers.

I've got 3 dozen free-range chickens. They are insatiable! They eat vegetarian pellets, scratch grains and most leftovers, including a "Chicken Bag" (instead of a Doggie Bag) when we go out to eat. Mine will not eat processed sweets like donuts, or cake -they take one taste of it, wipe their beaks on the grass in disgust, and stalk away. They love cheeses, breads, any leftover salad ingredients, including dressing. They like eggs in any form. They will happily eat meat, catching frogs/lizards/snakes and insects themselves. Feeding them leftover pasta is very entertaining, and they adore it! I have hundreds of fruiting plants, and every morning when they are let out, they immediately rush over to the Barbados Cherry and Jamacian Cherry trees to get the fallen berries. They are terrible thieves of Figs, Mulberries, Guavas and Grapes. They do not like or bother the Citrus. My veggie garden has to be securely fenced to keep them out. They will eat nearly all veggies, with Tomatoes being their favorites. I doubt you could grow enough, fast enough to keep them happy, since they will eat as much as they can reach until it is all gone. Watch for cabbages on sale at Publix. I've bought cabbages for $0.30, and it takes them hours to peck one apart. Fun for them, and cheap! Ask for fruit/veggie scraps at roadside stands, for free. Most places are happy to give away damaged or imperfect fruits/veggies. Mine graze too, and can put away a lot of grass! So, grow what you like to eat, and give the trimmings and imperfect stuff to the birds. Between the dogs and the chickens, we rarely have any food to throw away. Oh, NEVER give them anything moldy! "...there are less salts in Ferti-lome.'' People have gotten the idea that salts are bad when it comes to plants. While it's true that some salts (like table salt) are bad because plants do not absorb them in any appreciable amount, other salts are necessary for plants. A salt is simply a combination of a cation and an anion. A salt like calcium nitrate provides plants with necessary calcium and nitrogen. Magnesium sulfate (or epsom salt) provides plants with magnesium and sulfur. Inorganic fertilizers are just combinations of useful salts. As for fertilizer brands, I use Dyna-Gro's Foliage Pro 9-3-6 on everything I grow because it is a very close match to proven plant uptake ratios. I would avoid any bloom booster formulas. They have no benefit over other formulas and can be harmful in some situations. Here are a couple links if anyone cares to read up on it. The 'Used Tea Bag' article was interesting...I would have never expected that it could be used to treat puffy eyes. I think I stick to using it on my plants. I was wondering how many brewed tea bags would be the limit in a 2 gal. watering can. How much is too much?
