It is IMPERATIVE to be able to see the structural integrity of yard trees. In the last 7 years I've removed two large white ash trees from my property. Both because of splits at main branches. IF either was covered by ivy it would have been impossible to see this and poof, by one one would have fallen on my house (or Mustang! or wife). Now if its in a naturalized area let nature take its course to some limits. I suspect though natural control measures which limit the spread of vines in woodlands are not present in your yard. Fewer vine eating animals, less fire for a couple. So you'll need to play the control part or else the vine stands the potential to take over.

I went ahead and removed the vinyl lattice, I had to cut through it in a couple places so I didn't pull the vine down with it, but for the most part the crossvine was only attached to the fence. I installed vinyl coated welded wire in place of the lattice. Its green with the 2"x3" mesh pattern. At Lowes/Hope Depot its ~$40 for a 50' roll. Not only do I think the crossvine will attach better to it, I can SEE the vines better now. The wire does not block the fence (or the vines) and creates very little contrast. I'm going to use the vinyl lattice for another type of vine that won't have issues growing on it. Any suggestions? Thanks...

It may not seem consistent to say you can propagate crossvine by sowing seed and yet it doesn't spread aggressively by self seeding in nature. But it is. We propagate many plants by deliberate and careful seed sowing which don't naturally spread much that way. In the wild there are numerous barriers to seed success. And even if a plant does self sow, that doesn't make it invasive, or an aggressive spreader, which is what I think you are meaning. Normal gardening activity controls self sowing in a cultivated setting. "BTW, nearly all plants do NOT drop seeds." I don't really understand this statement. Can you explain what you mean? All flowering plants, other than artificially produced sterile cultivars, set and drop seed. Otherwise there would be no point in their having flowers.

Angela - I'm not familiar with crossvine (doesn't grown where I live) but I just looked it up and, assuming I found the right plant, it gets HUGE! I can't imagine you will be able to keep it in those planters for very long. Plus according the the North Carolina State Extension Service it is extremely flammable and should not be grown near the house. If we're talking about the same plant you'll need to reconsider.
