Kevin - if it was outside you should leave it outside, maybe with a little shelter from a bit of fleece or something held well off the foliage. Bringing it in might well be the cause of your problem. In the spring, buy a nice young plant at a nursery and plant it in your garden. Mine (in zone 6) stays green and usable all winter, so it will be very happy there with you in the Garden State. :-) Common sage also is very easy to grow from seed but no one really needs more than one, or maybe two at most. But even with regular pruning common sage tends to become woody and less productive in a few years, so you'll want to start with a new one from time to time. I much prefer Berggarten sage as it does not get woody in 2-3 years like common sage but has a nice mounding habit and does not bloom. You'll most likely have to look for a nursery that specializes in herbs in hopes of finding that cultivar, or else get it by mail-order.

FBX, I may do that. Not being cheap, I just enjoy growing from seed when possible. I think the trick with growing it from seed is you have to be cruel to be kind. Put it someplace where you forget about it and won't be tempted to water it when it starts to look dry. Treat it almost like a cactus in the early stages at least. Sometimes we are overly tempted to water things on our windowsills when the soil starts to get dry. Probably fine for most things, but it will kill small sage seedlings. Seedlings also be tempermental about just the right amount of light. Not too much or too little. At least that is what I seem to be noticing. Seedlings do seem to be tempermental in general compared to most herbs which are no brainers. Once established I'm sure they are easy & low maintenance like the rest. Most herbs are just good tasting/smelling weeds after all.
