Coral or Goldflame honeysuckle

I have been searching all the garden centers and nurseries and online centers for either of these plants. I would like an opinion. I found both online for about $10 but it cost $12 shipping 16% of the order but you have order at least $25 worth at this one place, these are in quart pots. Now I found the goldflame at a local nursery in a 2gal pot for $40. Is this any where near a fair price for this plant? Which is the best way to go?

I think a 2 gallon honeysuckle for $40 is way overpriced. I'd expect more like $20. Maybe if the plant was Coral Honeysuckle - lonicera sempervirens - and was a really nice robust plant $40 would be worth it, since I find Coral Honeysuckle starts out kind of slowly. Goldflame seems to be a faster grower when young. Perhaps you can find one or both of these plants in a friend's garden and take cuttings. A quart-sized plant is probably a year old, so cuttings would be a year behind the purchased plants, but they'd be free.

I have a Goldflame that is 3 years old now, paid about $28 for a half gallon sized plant. Last year it was pretty good, it looks to be magnificent this year-good luck but have patience-i think the free cuttings are the best deal, but if i knew the plant would turn like it seems to be, i might have paid more than i did.

One of the Dropmore Scarlet honeysuckles on my brother`s ranch by Pincher Creek does quite well - gets the full blast of winter and chinook winds - doesn`t need too much trimming up in the spring. Others that have been in the ground for 3 years have not fared well - either dead or nearly dead and are getting replaced with Jackmanii superba. Mandarin honeysuckle is hanging in there also. This past winter there was next to no snow cover, no snowdrifts so a lot of established perennials either didn`t make it or are really struggling.

Fragrant Goldflame Honeysuckle

I don't have an answer for you, only my own experience with it. I bought a 'Goldflame' about 8 years ago and it was nicely fragrant. It was planted in the wrong spot with not enough sun and I wanted to move it, but by then it was huge and I thought, well, I'll just cut this one down and not bother to move it and buy another one. Big mistake. I bought another one and it was fragrant, but I hate the fragrance. It smells artificial, like perfume. Yuck. I only had it just last year, so I'm waiting to see if it is still the same this year. If it is, I'm going to be looking for another one. I also went to a local nursery and they had a number of honeysuckles listed in their catalog as fragrant. I bought three and 2 are supposed to be fragrant. Last year was the first year with those too, and not one was fragrant. Giving them another season before deciding whether to replace some of them. I think I may have to try to buy them when they are in bloom to make sure they are fragrant.

Sorry it took so long to reply. I looked at my weigelas and they seem to be in a mixture of full sun and partial sun. Once the roots are established, it can be trimmed to shape it up. Or, you can let it wind around. It just goes where it wants. I try to keep mine a little trimmed. The hummers like them but they try others. For example, I have "Abelia, Edward Goucher" (I keep my plant identifiers that come with the plants) that the hummers will vist and land on the branches. I notice that they visit the "Nepeta, Walker's Low" before they come to the feeder (I have an image of it on my blog). They visit the butterfly bushes too. I also bought some small hummer plants--can't remember the names--after the hummers were coming. My goal was to plant a backyard that bloomed from Spring to Fall without thinking of the hummers. By dumb luck, I ended up with a nice mixture of plants that the hummers seem to enjoy too. I think I have one family of hummers. The boss male, any females he is successful with, and the kids. Whether or not $40 is too high for a 2 gallon plant is a direct function of how badly you want that plant. Still I paid $35 each for 2 gallon mountain laurel, at a private nursery, a couple of weeks ago, which suggests $40 for another native of the same size is a bit above market.

I can tell you that a couple of years ago my local Sears Hardware had Coral Honeysuckle - lonicera sempervirens -- and at a very good price -- I want to say around $25 for 2-3 gallon size. I planted them late in October, and the darlings have completely hidden the hideous 1950's style railing that leads to my 100 year old stone house.
