New to gardening and need advice

I am new to gardening and need some direction. We have a house in Justin, TX. The house came with the standard builder bushes (prickly looking things that flower sometimes) in the front border and a tree in the center of the front yard. Last year I thought I would add some color to the front of the house. I planted a few flowers in the borders and then read that I should put mulch on the borders to keep them moist. I did that. I think I did something wrong because the flowers never really grew and some of them just died within a few weeks. Maybe I didn't put enough mulch on them. It was about 4 to 6 inches deep, should it have been more? I would like to try again this year as well as start some things in the backyard. Right now it is just grass and weeds. Do I remove all of the mulch now to put more flowers in this year? Does it have to be changed every year? If I don't remove it, how do you keep it from getting mixed in with the dirt? Or does it matter? I am starting to see flowers in the store now, so is it okay to plant them?

Any pointers that you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone could recommend a good "Gardening 101" book that would be wonderful.

A very unfortunate title, but I'd recommend Gardening for Dummies, another in the series of "Dummies" books that are truly great basic resources for whatever topics they address and are ideal for the novice to the subject.

There are some very basic principles you should become familiar with right off the bat - soils, watering and light conditions. If one or more of these is not correct for the plants in question, failure and plant death can be swift :-( Soils in most new home construction (and in many existing lots as well) will be sorely deficient - either lacking in necessary plant nutrients, rocky, poorly draining or of heavy clay. In Texas, my bet is on mostly clay as caliche soils are very common there. Adding organic matter in the form of compost (your own or bagged) will hit several birds with one stone - it will loosen and lighten clay soils, it adds necessary nutrients and it improves drainage. Add 4-6 inches (more won't hurt) and work into the existing soil as deep as you can manage.

Watering new plants and those in hot climates is going to need to be a regular, perhaps even daily in summer, occurrence. Mulch will help but it won't substitute for regular deep watering. Avoid just lightly sprinkling or teasing the plants with water - water deeply so that it soaks well down into the root zone. More plants die from improper watering practices than for any other reason.

And finally make sure you are selecting plants that are suitable for that light exposure - sun loving plants in sun and shade loving plants in shade. Plants grown in full sun will often require more frequent watering than those grown in shade as water tends to evaporate faster in areas exposed to intense sunlight. The mulch will slow this process down. And if an organic mulch like compost or bark, it does not have to be removed before planting - just rake it aside and plant or work it into the soil. 4-6 inches is a bit deep and can smother plants if piled too closely around them. I'd go with about half that much - 2-3 inches of any good, readily available organic mulch.

Contact your Denton County Extension Office and ask to speak to one of the Master Gardeners. I have a friend here in Rockport that used to belong to the MG's up in Denton County, but transferred her certification to Rockport. The MG's are very good at giving advice because they are knowledgeable of the local gardening conditions.

I'm beating John to this. A close up of the fruit would be helpful, but to me, clearly you've got a lovely Improved Meyer Lemon tree. A few clues for you: First, it's a bush :-) Meyer's like to form more of a bush-like shape, very common. And perfectly okay. Second clue is the shape and color of your lemons. Rounder, darker, richer yellow which will continue to ripen to yellow/orange, and their skin will be thinner and smoother than, say, a Eureka or Lisbon lemon. They are extremely juicy, less acidic and make the best lemonade ever. They are also fabulous to cook with, just Google "cooking with Meyer lemons" and you'll see all kinds of great recipes. Martha Stewart extolled the virtues of the Meyer lemon, and that has launched the Meyer lemon into culinary stardom. Your Meyer lemon will produce ripe lemons nearly year 'round, so be sure to pick them off as they ripen. I don't let mine get over-ripe (soft and more orangy in color). If you don't pick the ripe fruit, you can force your tree into an alternate bearing cycle, which you don't want. Also, you need to rip out all the grass from underneath the tree, out just beyond the edge of the canopy by about a foot (that's the drip line of your tree, and where the feeder roots exist.) Be sure your tree is on a drip and not being sprinkled by the lawn sprinklers. That will be eventual death of a citrus tree, they do not like to be constantly wet from a sprinkler, you can cause fungal infections on the trunk that way. Lastly, be sure you fertilize your Meyer regularly, at least 3 times a year (I fertilize my Meyer more frequently, 4 times a year, and with twice the amount of recommended fertilizer because they are SUCH prolific fruit bearers). Lastly, you may want to treat for Citrus Leafminer if this is an issue in your area. Just search our forum for Citrus Leafminer or CLM, tons of messages around that - I've probably posted over 30 times at least about CLM :-) And, you can add your USDA & Sunset Zone in your "Zone" section where you have "South Texas" (see my zone info). That helps us on the list know how to best advise you as well. Patty S.

Bishop weed is notoriously difficult to kill, so go industrial with your smother, like multiple layers of cardboard, a thick, heavy layer of mulch to hold it firmly against the soil. A few sheets of newspaper won't do the job on that one. The benefit of using something that will decompose is that it doesn't have to be removed, and is not impermeable to moisture penetration. It will also conform to every groove and dip in the soil surface, which blocks the light completely, and the air and the very space needed for leaves to grow. (Starting a new planting area this way fits under the "lasagna" umbrella of methods.) I might use the smothering to eliminate mowing all the way to the corner, looks tight between the lilac and house. Then use some kind of border, bricks or landscape timbers, to keep the grass separated from that area. Next year, check under the smother. If you find no signs of life, you should be able to add some other plants there, whatever perennials, annuals you might like in your new flower bed. Just make sure to make the holes all the way through the cardboard if it has not fully decomposed. My concern about the light wasn't from the amount of it visible in the pic, but from the combination of things surrounding it, the structure of the lilac, and that it looks like it's to the north of the house/other shrubs, and under the eave from that angle. If you start new shrubs with pieces trimmed from this one, you could put them in other spots that get more light, to have some great lilacs since this one is in a less than optimal spot. Not an unattractive plant, just not able to fully perform there. Everybody does not do it the same way, have the same opinions or goals, so definitely take the info and use it to make your yard the way you like it. That looks like the same kind that makes a great tree, although commonly sheared into a shrub or hedge.

Five minutes of watering just wets the surface. It may be dry below. In fact, what you really want to do is water deeply but infrequently. The idea is to encourage the roots to go deep. Especially for tomatoes and peppers, fungus thrives in wet surface soil. I'd be careful about digging in uncomposted manure. That's high nitrogen stuff, and you can nitrogen-burn your plants.
