what natives have worked in containers for you?

I will be adding containers to my garden this year, as all this digging is becoming hard on my back and I have maples too. Would appreciate hearing from people about what natives have done well in containers.

A second question is, what natives will tolerate being moved out of container and into ground for winter, and what ones will sulk or outright die if moved. (I have a wonderful protected southern veggie patch that I can overwinter things in.)

I am less interested in the cold hardiness issue than in the general fussiness issue. Some natives are picky about soil and their roots, others are easygoing and tough. Lets assume that the containers will get the correct amount of light for the plant.

Common Sunflower and milkweed spp. do well in pots. Even certain marsh plants like Peltandra virginica,Calla palustris,Cituta maculata,Asclepias incarnata ssp. incarnata
and ssp. pulchra.

I've had a mountain laurel shrub in a whisky barrel for almost 5 years, its happy and getting ready to bloom in about 1 week.
Prickly pear does well in a container in a sunny location with sand mixes in. I have that in another whisky barrel and its hanging over the sides.

Wow! So many great veggies are being planted this year! I only have a tiny husky tomato plant that I bought from HD, this is my first go at veggie(don't have much space) so hopefully I'll have some good tomatoes soon! Dcat, great idea using those empty buckets you had on hand. I really need to think about what I have that I can utilize. :) Wow chinamon! Those have grown quite a bit! I've been thinking about using hydroton but not sure if I should. Seeing your plants and how well they have done makes me think I should go get some now! haha :) When you began your plants, did you put the seed in the hydroton and wait for it to germinate? Could you explain the process either in this post or in a private message. I've been hesitant because I don't want to loose my plants by novice mistakes. Haha Josh, its a shame about the garlic and your friends house cleaner threw it away. Some people see dirt and thinks its bad haha...on the contrary its super fresh! ;) Desert, a vineyard in containers!? Great idea! I can't wait to see how it does. Are you doing grapes? Ashley :)

Cupaniopsis anacardioides looks to be right. I though it was a South African native because I spoke with the local municipality and someone from the local botanic gardens happened to be there and said it definitely wasn't Australian and all he knew was that its South African. That's a pretty sad thought that the people running a botanic gardens cant recognise an Australian native.

Polemonium biflorum var. communatum (giant SolomonÂs seal)
Heuchera americana ÂAmethyst MistÂ
Asplenium scolopendrium (HartÂs tongue fern)
Polystichum braunii (BraunÂs holly fern)
The las two ferns can be removed and overwintered. We have done that with the same Brauns plant for about 6 years now

I have Mitchella repens, partridge berry, in containers and it's doing fine. Of course, it's probably not the kind of thing you'd want in a container. I'm just doing it to grow enough to put out as a groundcover.
