lupine seeding

I've had good luck germinating lupine seed without innoculating, but had a number of plants then die the second year. Anyone know if these are connected? I did transplant them early in the spring. Perhaps I should seed them into containers instead of the ground because of the long taproot. Also, anyone grown cream gentian without innoculation? Thanks

They should be fine. Lupine are biennial, so they normally spend their first season growing roots and a lower group of leaves. Hopefully, yours will just have a slight head start on growth, but will still spend next summer growing leaves and then bloom the next year. Lupine can also behave as perennials and continue to bloom for multiple yeas. Either way, your plant should survive winter just fine and keep growing next year. Martha
