Mountain Laurel

I just planted four Mountain Laurels, three and one at opposite ends of a plant bed. The earth there is good, a little sandy, but nice. The bed gets no more than four hours of morning sun. A Japanese Maple and Dogwood thrive at the shady end, and an Althea thrives at the sunnier end of the same bed. I keep my garden well watered and mulched. But I just read a national plant expert's book in which he said he had "less than laudable" experiences with Mountain Laurels. Any hints? Also, has anyone had bad puppy experiences with Mountain Laurel? I just read its poisonous to hooved domestic animals. What about Great Dane puppies? I keep my girl off my plants, of course. But I fear there may be a moment when my back is turned.
