The worst thing to do with a 2" up calibre tree is to let it fruit the first season, unless it comes with about a half ton of dirt. I'm sorry, but if you're impatient plant some blackberries or fall bearing raspberries. Part of my business is selling bearing age fruit trees in the southeastern NY area to impatient and usually wealthy customers. I instruct them to remove all flowers the first year because a transplanted tree that has started to fruit is tougher to get established than a sexually immature bare root. Next years flowers and this years fruit take a lot of energy to make, and it comes at the expense of root growth. You can't stop a mature tree from making next year's flowers but at least you should remove this year's (or the fruit as soon as it forms). I have potted trees in 15 gallon pots, but I even like them to get a lot of root in the ground before cropping them. Incidentally, I don't ship.

The genus for all of these plants has been changed to Morella. Morella cerifera, for example, is the Southern Wax Myrtle. Morella pensylvanica is the Northern Bayberry. All of these myrtles have some strong similarities, yet are quite different from each other. Anyway, the berry yield will not be very much, though the berries of the bayberries are larger (though not nearly as numerous). Both have very fragrant foliage and berries. There is another evergreen myrtle, Morella caroliniensis though I am not familiar with it. It is not reported to contain the aromatic oils that we appreciate in these plants. Creosote is NOT an endangered nor a protected species. Period. I checked the laws and provided links. The post by grendelmort saying creosote is endangered is factually baseless and is absolutely untrue! It's one a few posts that are simply spreading manure. Oh, and by the way, there are a couple of loopholes that allow removing or even destroying endangered species. It's amazing to me that anyone believes a post with absolutely no proof/references, especially one that doesn't even pass a common sense test. This is why urban legends persist. Now, I checked a bunch of other laws too. If someone is really, really interested I'll post links (after I get my taxes done). There ARE general laws which prohibit removing anything from state trust lands, not even with a permit (and a lot of other activities too; you'd be amazed). On BLM lands, removing anything is generally prohibited, but it is possible to obtain a permit. Same with some other federal lands. And, of course, on private land one must have permission from the property owner, otherwise you're getting into trespassing. Note, none of these laws have anything to do with creosote being endangered/protected; because it is not. A private property owner could destroy every creosote bush on his/her property with no fear whatsoever. Not that I'm suggesting it. I'm a very environmentally conscious person. It just irks me when people spread bogus information as though it's fact. I'm sorry I posted my question in the first place. I obviously had unrealistic expectations.
