I sometimes see yellow looking bubs on them in the woods. They seem to always turn pink. It may be a younger plant than the others.

You mean yellowish looking leaves right?

I think it may be due to the plant being too deep in
the mix and/or not having a strong enough root system.
The mix they are in could have broken down too much
and the plant roots cannot handle it.

If you have a spot to dig down into to check the mix
out then I would just see what is happening. In fact
take some out and stick it in a pot and water it and
see just how it performs. Drains freely? Lots of muck
or soil comes out?

On the vinegar and water, I hope that was 2 ounces of
apple cider vinegar and the water???

At this point there are two leaves (open a little but still curled around each other) that are about 3/4" out of the ground. There is also a pale brown spot on one leaf (if that's pertinent).

I used about 1 teaspoon/gallon of balsamic vinegar (I didn't have white or apple cider handy) in rainwater. But since I was guessing the volume of rainwater (it was in a tub I'd left outside to catch it) it may have been 2 teaspoons/gallon.

Because the soil in Maryland can be pretty heavy clay I built up a layer of mostly ground pine needles with a little leaf humus and planted them very shallowly in that last Fall. The other plants in that bed (There's ~ 5 small plants) are all a normal light green color.

I ignored them after planting them in the Fall and only watered them after they started growing this spring (2 x's so far).

Acaule is a difficult plant but I think it is only because noone really understands its needs. We are all just guessing! The species grows in a variety of habitats that all seem to share one common trait: coldness. The why of this eludes me at the moment but it definitely has something to do with its ability to absorb nutrients-possibly because warmer temperatures may inhibit absorption (but I am only thinking out loud)?

My failures with this plant is due only to not being able to provide an acidic soil nor to create a mix that is so. But I am mulling an entirely radical approach to its culture that I hope to experiment with in the near future.

If you are not attached to the plant, you may want to just
dig it up and carefully loosen the soil around its roots
and take images of the plant, roots, growing tip (close-ups as well) and see what you can determine about the shape the
plant is in. This shock could kill the plant especially if it is weak. But then the plant may die anyway. So it is a toss up but I vote for the examination! However do check the Woodlands forum link above to Transplanting Cyps and either post your message there or email those who posted who may be able to provide the advice you need.

If you do dig it up please make notes and post them here. I definitely would like to know what is happening with it as well as see image.
